Mrs_B
Unintentionally rhyming topic Since one of the Orpingtons was PTS the two remaining hens have got into new habits. One habit is not going to the loo inside their coop at night. I poop pick both flocks every day but never have to do so in the Eglu because it's always perfect in there, only a bit of bedding pushed aside. I wondered if anyone else's chickens do this? My other girls do what they need to over night, but the Orpingtons get into the Eglu at night, just sleep, and when they're up in the morning they'll scratch around (eat, drink etc) and then jump up on their shelter roof and have a short 'nap' whilst doing what they need to. Granted it's easy to pick up what I need to from the roof rather than the coop but it seems strange when they used to use their coop when the other girl was around. Chickens still surprise me with their strange ways x
Grandmashazzie
Gosh I wish mine would develop that habit. In this good weather most of mine sleep on bars outside coop only a couple seem to go in, there is a huge amount of poop under bars in the morning but is much easier to lift with my trusty wallpaper s"Ooops, word censored!"per
Beantree
Poos get larger as hens come into lay. When they are about to become broody they often wait until outside to do one huge poo in the morning. This must be some kind of preparation to avoid pooing in the nest of eggs during the night.

Lavenders_Blue
I find in the summer (shorter nights) that whilst the chooks do poop in the coop overnight, it's not much and they do also tend to do quite a nice, large stinky one first thing in the morning - so they must hold it in to a certain extent. In the winter (long nights) the coop is poop central!
