bluekarin
I was given one from my hubby's late grandmother last year and love it. Even started making bread dough in it. But, I think that was where things went wrong. The first few batches were fine, but the last one I did, the hook stopped moving and melted onto the spindle! I eventually managed to get the hook off and finish the dough by hand. I then went to use the mixer today to blend some pork and beef mince to make meatballs, and the blade attachment melted on! So I now have a mixer which I can't use. After a bit of research I have found out this spindle melting is a common problem. And at £10 approx per spindle, plus replacing the blade attachments, it's going to be a costly machine Has anyone else had this problem and did they manage to solve it, or is it a case of just replace the parts as and when? Purplemaniacs
I made my mum buy a magimix about 30 years ago (because I wanted to use it ), that one is still working DD has it now but only uses it occasionally. I have one too, other than replacing the bowl and lid we have never had any problems with them. What model do you have? Chrissie
bluekarin
It's a 4200. It's not very old as it was bought as a birthday present by one of her sons, I would say less than 10 years ago. She didn't use it very much as she couldn't use her hands a lot due to arthritis I think after my research last night, the old original ones are the best as they appear to still be going. The modern ones are a bit lightweight in comparison. I think I will just have to bite the bullet and get my old 70s Kenwood some new attachments and use that for heavy duty dough making etc and leave the magimix for light work. WitchHazel
I had a 5200 then a 4200, both XL versions so I could put decent sized bits of vegetable in to be sliced or grated. I really liked them, but I did get frustrated that (a) if I used the smaller bowls, stuff would invariably get in the big bowl as well, and (b) that the bowls weren't resally as interchangeable as they could have been. The big pluses were that (a) that the blade in the small bowl was close enough to the bottom to be able to make small amounts of Hollandaise sauce... many others manuafacturer models just couldn't do it properly because the blade was too far off the bottom to cope with such a small quantity of egg yolk; and (b) the range of discs etc available. In the end, I got really fed up with the washing up of it and I sold the 4200 and bought a different make. This one has two bowls, and the top bowl fits the bottom bowl completely and has a seal. No leakage. It only has a limited range of discs, but it is performing well. It took me a long time to make the decision, and to choose, and I'm pleased I made the move. If you need spares, then magimix spares (http://www.magimix-spares.co.uk/) are fantastic, very helpful. You could also try Ebay for a faulty 4200.
