I use miscanthus/elephant grass and have done for about three years in a wooden coop. I think it's great, it smells nice and I am unaware of a mite problem.

It's cheap, a little goes a long way and it doesn't break down quickly. In the wet winter our garden was very floody, the chickens were paddling in cold water. We emptied just one bale into their run which gave them a warmer, drier, if a little bouncy area to walk on. In March we bagged it up and took it to the dump. It never got too smelly. We bought two bales in November and we are still not half way through the second one. I would recommend it.
