Ate a caged hens egg

Recommended Posts

I was at guide camp this weekend. We had full English breakfast and I asked for fried egg. It was tasteless. Later when I was helping with washing up I noticed it said on the box caged hens eggs. I felt awful. Even before I got my own girls did only bought organic free range eggs. Going to take my own eggs next year :)

Even worse when you realise that the yellow yolk is achieved with chemical colourants Chickabee. What were you eating?

There are different standards of welfare for Organic eggs. Most are just the same as UK Free range with 4 square metres per hen, but their diet is certified Organic. For best welfare the Soil Association Organic is the one to go for as they have a minimum free range area of 15 square metres per bird. Incidentally the lowest animal welfare standards are attributed to the Red Tractor brand. They operate at the legal minimum level only, any worse and they could be closed down! So all the advertising is rather misleading I think.

I know that awful feeling Chickabee. On the rare occasions that I eat chicken, I always buy free range because I know that they have had a happy free range life. I went mad the other week after my OH bought a chicken that had lived in an 'enhanced' barn and I hadn't even noticed until I saw the packaging in the bin - and I'd already eaten it :(

Of course, he said I was overreacting but it's a matter of principle... :notalk:

I completely understand - I always feel guilty when I make a mistake...and making a mistake is easier than you think.

The more I find out the truth about what's in supermarket food, the more strict I become. I won't eat anything containing egg or chicken meat unless I know it's free range. I was offered a bought cake from family the other day, they looked dumbfounded that I refused when I realised the eggs were from battery hens. If it doesn't say free range on the label, it is battery eggs. I used to love a Chinese takeaway but now I can't bear it

I have become very fussy in the last few years, I am actually going to the organic side more and more everyday.
