xsoggyx
The 5 days are up and it looks like the pecking order has been established, now for the big release. Any tips anyone can give for this historic occasion? Already experianced our first egg within 24hours of delivery and I found this unsual urge to dance but reading other posts about the dance this appears to be normal. Any hoo, any help for this Question Question newbie fully appreciated.
Mel (& Paul)
Ok So You open the door and stand back the chooks come out and you start doing the chicken dance your neighbours cast worried glances across the fence............
arowland17
then you start to panic as they quite quickly begin to destroy your garden, mine seem to save up their poo for when they're out on the lawn!! and love my peppers growing on the patio so I position my chair next to them with a broom in one hand to shoo them away when they get too close!! Mel (& Paul)
Then you build a huge fence around the bits of the garden you want saved. Then you find that your chickens can fly over the fence...............
arowland17
or just trample it down or find a hole in the fence to squeeze through!! we just spend the hwole time chasing them away from certain bits of the garden, would never let them out alone they cause too much havoc!! Jules.
It's handy to stand to the left of the run door as you open it so you don't get trampled by chickens I learned this the hard way.
BeckyBoo
Also good to ensure you don't have painted toe nails, or if you do that you are not wearing open toed shoes of any kind due to propensity of chickens to peck shiny thing. (like toes) Ensure camera is ready, position chair alongside wine glass and prepare to giggle. Do Not under any circumstances attempt to eat anything whilst your chickens are out as the urge to steal from humans is strong. Also do not attempt to put chickens back into the Eglu barefoot due to huge amount of poo deposited obstacle course style round garden, particularly concentrated on route from house to Eglu. Snowy
Then you put a wanted on freecycle for chicken wire so you can restrict their access to certain areas of the garden. Before you know it they will have taken over ....
BeckyBoo
Shortly after intial release, being worn out from chasing chickens from unsuitable parts of the garden, having invented, tried and dismissed numerous methods of chicken destruction prevention, you give up, kiss goodbye to your fuschias, forget-me-nots, vegetable seedlings, small plants and other decorative or edible types of flora, sit back with defeated look on face and, after a short while, begin to smile in a slightly insane manner. As per reply number one.....neighbours cast worrying looks over the fence...... Mrs B
xsoggyx
OMG These are not animals they are carfully disguised Weapons of Mass distruction !!! I could not wait for the replies so I opened the gate and stood back. Now I know what a January sale is like for the Mrs !!! They were digginf, pooping and eating everything in site then one of them had to quickly run back to the Eglu to lay and egg then it was shake shake and back to the garden. VERY funny to watch especailly when they found a worm and at one point it was a tug of war (Wish I had a camera for that part). I must admit working in IT I am a bit of a geek but since having the girls I spend more time watching them and posting on here.
Guest
No one mentioned free entertainment for life - and of course - relaxation therapy.
marshhens
I so know what you mean!! For me the stressful bit is getting them back in! First time was fine - tempted by bread and marmite. Second time - much more interested in our poppys so no way to the bread. Even taking the excitable Daxie out on the lead didn't work. Eventually I did an impression of a large (very) airplane - arms out wide, and they did agree to be shephered back in!! The breeder said that by approaching from behind they would crouch down and I could pick them up - pah - mine haven't read that book! If I take them out of the eggport (thanks to the forum for that tip) they are happy to have a cuddle tho!!
