I think it's the Sussex but not sure, however twice now I have heard purring just like a cat. Once when they were dust bathing and the other this evening when they had gone in the coop.

 

I gather it's because they are content.

I love the purring! Mine do it a lot during dust bathing too, but also when laying an egg.

I was also reading online that it may also be when they are sleepy.

 

We had a second egg today but it was all smashed up when I got to it.

They are probably just practising with laying and aren't very accomplished at shuffling around with an egg... I sometimes find an egg on the roosting bars.

It pays off checking on them when they've gone to bed, with a little torch. That way you might save any late eggs.

I love to hear the purring too.

One of the best purrs was when I had a poorly one indoors for a while in the dog crate.

Seeing she was feeling a bit down, I popped her outside in the sun on the grass and gave her a seed tray of soil. She made so many contented noises it made us smile. She loved that tray of dirt.

I got 2 egg songs and 2 eggs this Blessed Solstice. The second one was still warm

I'd not noticed the purring before. Probably too busy nattering away to the girls. I did hear the exbats purring at bed time the other night. How lovely
