Chickabee
I've just read an article in Practical Poultry, about feeding fish meal to chickens. Does anyone do this.? Would it taint the flavour of the eggs?
Beantree
We accidentally bought some rearers pellets with fishmeal in as the protein (usually soya is used). Within 24 hours the stench was unbearable. Seemed to have a terrible gut reaction and all the birds poos were stinky, slimy brown. The feed was binned and decent stuff bought immediately, but it took a full week for things to return to normal. I would expect it to affect the egg taste in some way but have no intention of trying it Chickabee.

The Dogmother
I am surprised that they are allowed to sell feed with animal products in it.
Chickabee
Apparently chicken feed used to always gave it in . The guy who wrote the article swore it was a better source of protein than soya, and that his girls laid better. Still not trying it though
The Dogmother
That's right, it did, but DEFRA regulations now state that poultry may not be fed any animal by products. I assume that also applies to fish meal. I don't doubt that it's a better source of protein.
Redwing
That's right, it did, but DEFRA regulations now state that poultry may not be fed any animal by products. I assume that also applies to fish meal. I thought that too as there was some debate about the Garvo products that have the little shrimp things in but that was deemed ok as it was made abroad. I can only imagine that the article was an old one not checked for publication. like so many of their articles
Chickabee
It was in the latest edition. Bit strange I think
kissinuk
Fish meal is awful for the environment, generally produced by trawlers that pick up whole shoals of fish too young to be caught. Ironic thing is most of them are then used to feed farmed salmon & other fish which is ridiculous. I'd stay well clear.
Chickabee
Oh no. I didn't realise the implications. Maybe I should write a email to the magazine, with a compilation of our thoughts
