nikkim
My two girls have been apart during the day for about a week because of a toe injury that we cannot get to heal. I let them together during cleaning out this afternoon and within seconds blood was everywhere again. Purple spray does not cover it adequately. Stockholm tar works but brings new scale off as it wears away so the cycle repeats itself. We are thinking that we are going to have to bandage it somehow or we will never get it healed. Any body done the same?
Chickabee
Have you tried wound powder? Wouldn't know where to start with bandaging
gavclojak
What about that second skin spray fron the pharmacy?
Beantree
We bandage toes quite often Nikkim, using lint and micropore tape. We apply tea tree cream to the lint and put that over the injured area with 25mm tape so that the area is protected, then wrap 12mm tape around to form a protective layer and bind it all to the toe further up. It usually falls off after about a week.
nikkim
Thanks for that. Will give it a go. Situation is driving us nuts and makes it difficult to ask anyone else to mind them.
nikkim
Toe bandaged yesterday. So far so good. She doesn't know what to make of it. Quite funny.
percy049
We've used micropore tape in the past to bandage a toe. It is amusing to watch the chickens with it on!
nikkim
Unfortunately problems continue. If left alone other parts of the feet and legs are getting pecked. Antipeck has no effect at all. I despair at ever being able to leave them unsupervised again so they are swapped throughout the day, one to penned area and one free ranging. Nightmare. mullethunter
That does sound like a nightmare. Are you able to separate them permanently?
nikkim
We have plenty of space so yes. They bed down happily enough together at dusk. Makes going out/away difficult though, unless we get another eglu and pen. Unfortunately my reliable neighbour has moved away and I am yet to find anyone willing to replace her. mullethunter
Can you make a make shift house for one of them and split the run?
nikkim
We have an eglu and run within a larger fenced area and then access to a much larger fenced area of mixed garden for free ranging. We currently use a large plastic pet carrier which is left out in the garden area for shelter, together with food and water. My husband works from home so swapping them round regularly during the day so they both get free ranging time is not a problem. As spring progresses and trips and holidays start I am concerned about how we are going to manage the situation. I am hoping a note in the village magazine might turn up a willing helper. Beantree
Have they got scaly leg mite Nikkim? Sometimes that can prompt foot pecking.
nikkim
Don't think so. Am on the ball about that. We wash feet and legs and Vaseline. Vet could find no trace of it.
