Couperwife
I worked out how to knit in the round by starting with i-cord. you start with 2 dpns and cast on about 6 stitches, knit the 6 stitches, but instead of turning around and knitting the other way, you push the yarn to the other end of the dpn and start again, it doesnt look like it should work, but if you keep going for a few rows, you get a little tube. now, get another dpn and put 2 stitches on each one, take your time and knit the 2 stitches on the first dpn, take the empty needle and then knit the 2 stitches on the next dpn, and so on. if you only have a few stitches, you can make a mistake and its not a pain to start again. start with 100 stitches and you will give up (or rather I did) give it a go, I hope it works out for you good luck cathy x
lost-sheep
if you use hge needles stuff grows quickly!!! a scarf can be done in hour (even by me!!) you should try crotchet 2!! its a little harder than knitting and grows slower but you can make some wicked blankets!! and this is coming from a teenager!! Couperwife
Lost sheep I love knitting with huge needles, I have some 6 foot needles that I got from the Knitting and stitching exhibition in Olympia London, I havent had the courage to use them yet though, Couperman thinks that they look like the borrowers needles I can actually crochet, as long as you dont mind circles, anything else is totally beyond me, and crocket patterns look like ancient egyption what are you knitting at the moment? craftyhunnypie
I'm on my knitting loom at the moment. It's kind of like a rectangular knitting Nancy (french knitting thing) where you hook the bottom yarn over the top. It grows really quick & looks quite effective. I was going to make a scarf, but it seems a bit wide. Not sure what it will end up being....A cushion??? It's just fun & relaxing to do, whilst watching the chooks on a lousy rainy day. craftyhunnypie
The pale blue mittens have got a cuff made already!!!! Perhaps when they are made, I could turn then into chicken mittens... watch this space!!!!! Emma.x
Couperwife
chicken mittens - how sweet for the feet or the wings???
craftyhunnypie
for the wings ( for their snowball fights in the winter)- They would need fingerless gloves for their feet, with all those toes! I can just picture them with bob hats, scarves or ponchos, leg warmers, mittens & toeless footgloves! Emma.x
Couperwife
yes, I see where you are coming from, you might need to put strings on them so they dont lose them though ponchos, now thats an idea we haev 4 identical white chooks, I could knit them ponchos in different colours so I could tell them apart (they would probably go into the eglu and swap, just to confuse me )
Lesley
yes, I see where you are coming from, you might need to put strings on them so they dont lose them though I thought mittens on strings were compulsory?
Trish
hey who started a knitting thread when I wasn't watching Cheers
The Dogmother
I really admire people who can knit. I'd love to be able to knit - my grandma and mother were both great knitters; I can dress-make and crochet, but not knit, and nowadays I just don't have the time Something to take up when I retire, methinks. If anyone out ther can knit socks, then I'll buy some from you!
Nicola H
I can knit socks but it takes me ages.............That reminds me I still have a ball of sock wool left over I must knit some more.
The Dogmother
That's ages less than it'd take me!!! If there are any sock knitters out there, I need some lovely warm winter socks... pretty please

Suziwoo
I've enjoyed reading your knitting thread and loved the pictures. Was just wondering if any of you know where I can get the pattern for one of the little knitted chicken covers that go on cadburys cream eggs for little easter presents. My children have received them from other people - yellow chicks and rabbits, but I have seen a picture - I think on the gallery - of a lovely white chicken with a bright red comb. I would love to be able to run some off for my children to give to friends next Easter - will probably need all that time to get them ready - it's been a long time since I picked up any needles!!!! If anyone has any ideas I would be grateful.
Trish
I have some 6 foot needles that I got from the Knitting and stitching exhibition in Olympia London, I havent had the courage to use them yet though, Couperman thinks that they look like the borrowers needles OO I have some of those, from the narrowboat lady. I love knitting with them, you can make great rugs and bed spreads and it uses up all those half balls of wool. Just a pain having to stand up to knit though. (not joking they are so bug I can't stil down with them)
Couperwife
Trish, I've never even attempted to use them, I dont really know how to do it... I assume that you need to use lots of strands at the same time How many strands and how many stitches do you use? (if you were to make a rug?) craftyhunnypie
Those 6 foot needles sounds fabulous. The sort of thing I'd have a go with & the sort of thing hubby would catch me doing in the garden & look and roll his eyes. Nothing seems to amaze him with me!!! he he Emma.x P.S The mittens are growing and I'm now working the thumb bit. If I dare blow my own trumpet...I'm a bit impressed with myself! Trish
okay I'm using about 5 balls of yarn at the mo and some of them are chunky ones. The thinner the yarns the more strands you need. I've cast on about 44 stitches and that is just wide enough to be a single bed spread, it's all going to depend on the yarns you use. To use them I stand up with them resting on the floor and swing the needle tips side to side to move the yarn and stitches. I'll try and find a photo if it helps. Hope that helps, I think it's a bit of an experiment thing really
Kathy C
I love the Alan Dart toys too. I am making the mermaid from Simply Knitting too. I'd love to make the ark it looks such fun. Who would i make it for though?
craftyhunnypie
Hiya - there is a charity that asks for all things knitted, crocheted or sewn. You could make it & donate it to a childrens nursery too. Just a few thoughts! Emma.x
ali-s
Well I have been inspired to pick up knitting needles again after a 10 year gap. I started knitting a cow last night and have already finished the body and the head. Spent an age searching for all my knitting equipment on Friday only to be told by OH that he threw it all away last year How dare he Now I will have to start from scratch, so I am a proud owner of 3 balls of wool and one pair of needles Anyone know of any cheap places to buy knitting equipment
Nicola H
Well done Ali........... I have found the internet the cheapest place for knitting supplies although the prices of wool vary so much. For instance i want to knit a jumper in Sublime Merino wool and the prices range from £5 a ball to £2.99, so i would suggest once you know what you want have a good search around first and watch out for the dreaded postage.......... craftyhunnypie
Well I started knitting Mr. Beans Teddy Bear this weekend whilst away in the caravan. His body is done and so is one leg - so he's getting there! My next project will be a tea cosy I think or an elephant! Emma.x
