Nepal earthquake & Clandon House

Recommended Posts

OH works alongside a large number of Nepalese men and women who were obviously worried about home this week. Most of them had heard from family but a couple hadn't. Luckily now everyone has heard that their families are safe. One man's family home was destroyed but that was the worst news. They are the nicest group of people my husband works with and this is good news.

I was also sad about Clandon House burning down , not particularly because of the Georgian artifacts but because of the regimental museum in the basement. That contained a lot of personal items. I believe that some of it was rescued by the firemen who understand the importance of these collections to serving soldiers so that is some good news too.

On both counts - just devastating.

As a local watched the news on Clandon unfold with disbelief. Only visited last year despite living not a few miles away for nearly 40 years! Beautiful place and the museum will be a huge loss. I am researching a local graveyard and many of the deceased served in the Queens Royal Surrey Regt.

Nepal hit me harder of the 2 events. The Nepalese always seem like lovely, peaceful, nature loving people & this was a huge tragedy for them.

Clandon hadn't really been on my radar before the dreadful fire, but any historical home being damaged in this way is a terrible loss to the country.
