Thumbcat
So far, for my imminent hens, I have: Diatom powder - for puffing around the coop/chickens/in dust bath - should I also add some to their food? V1 spray disinfectant Purple spray Stalosan F Apple cider vinegar with garlic Bokashi bran I still have food, bedding, mixed grit and corn to buy Do I need any other form of mite powder/spray or is the Diatom adequate? And do I need stuff like poultry spice or limestone powder? I had no idea chickens required so much stuff!
Grandmashazzie
I would add nutriment drops, good if one is unwell. Its the sort of thing if you need it will take a few days to get to you. Also Flubenvet for worming.I use Smite for cleaning out coop. gavclojak
If you feed a good quality pellet then you shouldn't need to add anything, I use a ivermectin based spot on *not licenced for use on poultry...it's a spot on preventative for mites ticks and bugs and I use a few drops on the back of the neck every few months (egg withdrawal period of a week) make sure you keep a medicine book to list what you have given them and when! I think you have the basics covered and you will find there are bits and pieces you will pick up on the way. What type of hens are you getting? BHWT is doing a rehoming on 30th may, maybe some wonderful ex-commercial ladies
Luvachicken
Other things that are useful are a scruffy pair of jeans and an equally scruffy apron. My apron is one of those gardening ones but is perfect for doing stuff with chooks like squirting their feet with scaly leg stuff or dusting them with powder. Enjoy your chickens when you get them and don't forget to show us what you get. Pekins are always nice
Cat tails
Oh and a pair of gloves! To pick up poo, clean poo trays and do all other types of poo related things!
Thumbcat
Thanks for all the suggestions - what a great forum this is. Gloves for poo picking is a definite top priority! I'm planning to get a few hybrids first of all while I get to grips with things, but I'd definitely want to give a home to some ex-batts in the future. Ain't Nobody Here
Special chicken shoes so you don't trail poo into the house . I keep mine at the back door in an Ikea tray.
