The Dogmother
*shrugs* I wouldn't worry about it PixieDust, unless you are less than 12 miles away from the centre of the infection (if indeed it is confirmed). Having said that, this is a timely reminder that we all need to have runs which are, or can be made bio-secure, and are large enough to house our whole flock in comfort. If there is avian influenza in your area (we've had it here before) then they will need to be confined under cover if you are within the central exclusion zone. Mar1a
I had a text alert about it on Friday. While it's too far away to affect us, it did make us have a conversation about what we would need to do if we were within an affected area and how close geographically it would have to be to us before we started to take proactive action. The Dogmother
TBH, I would suggest checking out the relevant pages on DEFRA regarding the exclusion zones as they aren't very proactive when there is a problem. Last time, I only heard when a vet friend texted me, and a friend, who is within the zone, and registered with DEFRA never heard a peep from them! Mar1a
I have looked at those. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me. We decided that we would take our own action if and when it becomes a problem locally, which to be fair, isn't very likely because I don't think there are any places to be concerned about within a 15 mile radius, and that's a small scale bird farm. 25km is the exclusion zone that we will set ourselves. Cat tails
We've had a few cases of avian Influenza in the Netherlands. All poultry, commercial and domestic, had to be kept inside. Wasn't allowed to put the poo in the compost or grey bin for weeks! I'm not too worried, but I do make sure I don't visit any farms etc. It's almost impossible to shield your own birds from the flu, but I don't want to be responsible for transferring it to a poultry farm. Mar1a
I just had a text from APHA to say it's confirmed
chickenNutter
Very sad news and a lot of birds destroyed. They farmed both free range and colony cage birds. I am twice the exclusion zone distance away as the crow flies, not sure if I should still keep mine under cover as a precaution?
The Dogmother
I would keep them under cover a while and keep a eye on them. Not much else you an do besides that.
PixieDust
Sad news indeed. So glad I argued with the OH for a roof on the run. No, it wasn't near me but the next outbreak could be.
