How to fit bumpa bits?

Recommended Posts

I'm staggered how unhelpful Omlet are on this subject Scrambledhead. I asked about fitting them in 2012 and all I got was "We don't know? "Ooops, word censored!"ody here would dream of fitting one of those to their chickens!"

Very simple really, with the correct tool which you now have (external circlip pliars). The two ball ended prongs need to fit into the nasal passages. The small loops at the sides are just to maintain the correct spacing over the beak and are where you put the ends of the pliers to open the bit. The flat bar fits in the beak and the round 'bumper' must be in front of the beak (about 3mm) so they can't peck. I've looked for photos and have previously seen good ones but they are no longer coming up on searches. These bits have been used for a long time on pheasants.

Be careful that the ball ends are inside the nasal airways (they have plenty of other airways) and are not crushing or distorting them too much. Just a matter of taking time.

Be aware that occasionally a chicken will go absolutely nuts when these are fitted and try to tear it out. Be patient and watch carefully. We have on occasion had to remove the bit for a few hours then refit it.
