Re: Blood from Vent Prolapsed Vent?

Recommended Posts

Think it's going to be PTS time for Ruby.

She's lasted a while since vet thought she might have a tumour but think it's time for her to go now ;-(

She's clucking, and a mix of water and blood is coming from her vent.

She's not laid for ages, but think something inside her has popped. The other girls have NOT pecked her, as we keep her in the kitchen when the rest go to bed.

Just bloomin'sad today ;-(

Don't use haemorrhoid cream Stacey, that can obstruct the healing process. The correct treatment is a smear of Manuka Honey cream on the prolapse then pushed back into place and held for a moment to let the muscles move it back into the correct position. Yes, we have successfully treated two pullets, but older hens have less chance of success. There is minor surgery that can be done I have heard, but although it has a high success rate it is also expensive. Important she doesn't lay for a while, so a diet of only wheat works in that respect. You will probably have to re-insert the prolapse several times over several days.

I'm glad you've got the chance to help her 8) .

I managed to get a prolapse back in successfully (although there wasn't any bleeding). I used sugar (which is presumably a similar principle to the honey, which does sound easier to administer!). I kept her in the house and on my lap as often as I could, holding her vent so she couldn't push it out.

Good luck  .
