Cat tails
I have the strong suspicion that a peregrine falcon is living in my neighbourhood. Thought to have seen one flying about few weeks ago. Tonight I saw a falcon sitting on the rooftop of the houses at the back of mine. I was quite excited, but the ladies weren't pleased at all. On the one hand I think it's great such a rare and beautiful bird is hanging around. But I'm slightly concerned it might be a threat. Should I be worried or just enjoy the view? sjp
peregrines are mainly high speed airborne hunters i.e. they take birds on the wing but I suppose if their short of prey and desperate they might try a small chicken. Lewis is the one to ask through we get them here most summers plus Buzzards and the occasional sparrow hawk and this year a very nice looking Kestrel which spent a few minutes on my fence watching my mob. I just treat them as a nice addition to the neighbourhood and hope they put a good dent in the local pigeon population
Cat tails
Not too many pigeons and I do have rather small chickens... But also very small crowded garden, so hopefully to small area to comfortably catch a chicken in...
Lewis
We have a Tawny owl living in one of the big trees at the back of our garden above the chicken run who we hear calling most nights but I wouldn't be worried about them free ranging. We have a Peregrine and they go after small birds and pigeons on the wing (flying) rather than birds on the ground. A large fowl chicken would be too big, with your little bantams I wouldn't put it past them if they're really hungry but it would be unusual. I'd keep an eye on them when free ranging and hope the local pigeon population is keeping them fed.
