I've been reading a few american blogs on chicken keeping and it seems to be quite usual to collect day old chicks from a store that are already sexed ( I'm not talking about auto-sexing chicks) - even buff orpingtons which are notoriously difficult to sex for ages!! So I'm presuming they're vent sexed at birth? Wouldn't that be great if that was available here??!

Nope.

They extract some fluid from a few day old furtilised eggs and see if the cells are male or female.
