Bantam leghorns

Recommended Posts

We have bantam Leghorns Sophie. They come in two colours, white and brown, that I know of. Yes they do lay very well and consume about 80g of feed a day for one 35-40g egg (although our first lot made 50g eggs), so they are very efficient and were popular during the War because of that and needing less space. They are highly strung and very flighty indeed, but can also become very tame. Any run must be covered to keep them inside it and needs to allow at least one square metre per hen otherwise they will get very bored and squabble, even with a perch. Ours have 2m2.

Beware of your source for these. Some can be on the large side so not bantams, but most of all the combs on hens, when perfect, should flop over to one side but not enough to obscure their vision. The breed standard for hens and cockerels requires two different breed sets as the cockerel should have an upright comb. To achieve that the breeding hens will have upright combs and the show breeding surplus hens are often sold to the unwary, although they should be perfectly satisfactory for eggs. The laying abilities will be strain dependent so if that is important you need to talk to the breeder. There is a Leghorn club.
