ubereglu
If you recall a few months ago I posted up on the forum about 1st time cars for a new driver, now comes the tricky and expensive job of insurance! I finally passed my driving test late September, and am now about to buy my first car-not a model I was originally thinking of, as I have decided to purchase my sister's 2010 Vauxhall Corsa, 1.2l petrol. I've run my details through the likes of GoCompare, Confused, Moneysupermarket et al, including my Dad as a named driver, and the cheapest quote is £925 through Admiral, whereupon I would be required to install a black box. Having looked around I think this is fairly reasonable, but do any of you have any suggestions as to who may be cheaper, or whether a black box is actually worth it? sjp
have a look at Churchill and there are a couple more that don't always come up on compare sites might not be any cheaper but it'll give you a bit more scope but most charge high rates for new drivers the type of car can add to the cost as well as for the cost of the black box that'll depend on how much it'll save you on the cost of the premium over the next year or 2. personally I'd want at least £200 a year before I'd even think about it
Olly
If you go to Moneysaving Expert and click on car insurance, it tells you which of the comparison sites cover which insurers, and also which ones are not included in any of the sites. It's tedious but worth doing to get a full picture of the market.
soapdragon
Have you tried a broker? I use the price comparison sites each year and also a local broker and, for the last two years, the broker was cheaper. I now pay £164 or thereabouts fully comp on an 02 Skoda Fabia (but then I am very old!)
Geoid
£ 925 is about as cheap as you can get for a new driver. I've been driving for just over a year now, and I just had a look and the cheapest I found was about £1000, thats with a box fitted.
percy049
My first year as a main driver was nearly £900 as I passed a year before that. I know my friends' first year was around £1200. RE a blackbox, it depends how you want to drive, your privacy and how restricted your budget is
