clucker1
Has anyone got a recommendation for entertaining the chickens in the format of a bird feeder, one that they can feed from. Also, what to put in it. My lot are so bored, there's only so many treats you can give them, they are being very good considered I'm full up so to speak with 12 chickens at the moment. Initially, I did wonder if I would prefer it them being shut in as no worrying when they are free ranging. However, I've decided if it was like this all the time I'd have less chickens and or give up. There's no fun in it when they can't go out and play. Roll on 28th February
Luvachicken
Mine have never been out to play and they all seem to manage - far too many big cats around for it to be safe for them. They have 2 benches to play on, 4 wooden mushrooms and 2 pits full of leaves as well as their soil in their run. The leaves are useful because when you sprinkle treats on them they disappear and it takes a while for them to find them all. One of the best toys mine have is a cat treat ball. You can change the size of the hole depending on the size of the treat. They kick it around and the treats fall out. They have this in with their leaves. They've had mealworms in the ball, Garvo treats, corn or sunflower hearts in it. It keeps them entertained for a while.
clucker1
Thanks Luvachicken, I'll look into that. Really they are fine, it's me really! Fed up! They have loads of things to balance, prance about on inc a full length preening mirror and wood chips deep enough to dig to Australia in. They of course have now got me trained whenever I go in to bring them a treat so more digging around in their run!
Luvachicken
It must be hard when they had lots of freedom before. I would love to see mine running around the garden but there really are too many cats. It sounds like yours have loads to do and I'm sure they are looking to coming out again soon. It won't be long before Feb 28th comes. Fingers crossed they don't change the date.
Luvachicken
Meant to say that I did use to use chicken treat balls but found these split in half very easily. I was worried the girls might get their feet or head stuck in it if it were to shut on them - that's why I got the cat treat balls. Will see if I can find the box for the cat treat box. clucker1
Thank you Luvachicken. I've put myself a note to clip their wings before 28th Feb, or else they will have the last laugh and will be flying all over the place!
Millie-Annie
We have loads of cats round us, they are all terrified of the chickens
Luvachicken
Found the box. It is a 'Cat It' cat treat ball. I got it in a local pet shop but have seen them on Amazon. The treats last longer because there is a spiral running through the centre making them take longer to work their way out.
