clucky
I've just read my four beautiful hen the riot act today !! We have had them SIX weeks now, AND NOT AN EGG IN SIGHT ! They are all well settled (2 speckled marans, a wellsummer and light brown sussex) free-ranging all afternoon, treats galore, chicken spice in layer pellets, citracidal and cider vinegar in water de-wormed from vets presciption the lot. We were told the 2 pure breed ones (wellsummer and brown sussex) were P.O.L! AT WHAT POINT DO YOU THINK THEY WILL LAY ?? The marans were younger at 15 weeks, so that means they are about 20 weeks now (came 1 week later than the others) How much longer, or I may end up showing them the hatchet !!!!!! They are adored! Ladylucan
I had to wait over 10 weeks for my first egg.
clucky
Thanks for reply ladylucan. Even though its not what I wanted to hear, in other words we could be another month away yet! Do you think maybe its something to do with the type of breed we have, as my friend has 2 blackrocks, a white star and rhode island red and she only waited 3 weeks after P.O.L. (from same shop) and she gets al least 25 eggs a week, every week. Oooh how lovely.
Shirl
Could it be you are giving them too many treats? I've read fat hens don't lay. Not that I'd call anyone's hens fat
Ladylucan
Could be, i now have 14, though 7 are still babies, and out of the 7 that lay, i am lucky to get 4 a day,,. They will lay honest, try putting a china egg in the bottom of the nesting box, so they know what it is for, x
xChicken04x
We havent been in that situation, but in a way you are quite lucky. When we first got ours on the first day after about 15 minutes Gemma and Lacey went up to the nesting box and layed an egg each. Then the next day everyone else layed except Magic. A few days ago Magic layed, it taken her 19 days till she finally layed. But in those 19 days it was more fun to watch at the window wondering if she will go up the ladder and opening the egg port to see if there was an extra egg that day. Everything was quite over welming on the first and second days so just enjoy the your time with your girls and when you least expect it, expect it! xx
feemcg
Pure breeds often don't lay until 26-30 weeks - I'm waiting for a 25 week old Cream Legbar at the moment who has very red comb and wattles, and crouching. If she doesn't lay by 1st October, I'll be feeding her all winter for nothing - only kidding, I love her really
clucky
Funny enough ladylucan, I have aquired 2 white china eggs which are sat on my kitchen widowsill ! It did cross my mind today to do that, but I wasn't sure whether that might turn them broody. Do you really think I should place them both in the nesting box ? chelsea
Both Sam and Ella were nearer 26 weeks when they first laid. The maran I bought on Tuesday at 20 weeks laid an egg the same day They are all different I suppose!
clucky
Thanks for asking Ladylucan. I took your advice and placed the two china eggs in the nest box and guess what .............. not one egg!!!! They obviously didn't take me seriously when I told them all the things I would do too them, nor did the fake eggs work, which by the way are still in there !!!! I've now given up hope of any eggs, I don't think we can wait any longer... as we are now approaching 2 months !!! It's going to happen soon surely, please oh please !!
