Chickabee
With much sadness we are having a huge Ash tree cut down. It's too close to the house and causing cracks. We're keeping the logs to burn in the future, but can I use the chippings in the chicken run?
sjp
if it's in leaf I'd not risk it as they'll shred everything from 3 inch down and this time of year the leaves will start to rot down very quickly which results in a lot of heat in the pile which in turn triggers mould to grow with in the heap great for a compost bin but I'd not risk it for the chicken run
Chickabee
I did wonder about the leaf. I won't bother then. Thank you
Blackrocksrock
All you need to do is compost it for a while till the heat is out of it and it starts to break down. It is too good not to keep and use just not fresh is tge key. Keep in a big pile. Hubby was a tree surgeon so we used to get loads of this. Chickabee
To use on the garden?
Blackrocksrock
I used mine in the garden and in the chicken run, Mine free range all day so no need to change the bark often, just move the eglu and run once in a while. Too good just for the compost bin. It is great for weed supression on beds but again not fresh
BridieLou
We had a huge ash removed too. I did throw a load of the chip on the chicken run and they've been fine. Didn't have any leaves in it, but then they used to eat the leaves as they fell to the floor. All still alive.
