AJuff
Where can I buy wood chips from to make a permanent run for my chooks? How thick should they be? How much do they cost? Also will I still have to poo pick or replace them? Anyone with any experience out there willing to share it?
paulgray
B&Q is as easy as anywhere. They are about 5 pounds a sack, each sack being 75 litres I think. Make sure you go for the wood chip and not the bark, as woodchip lasts longer and does not go soggy. You can also purchase dyed woodchip; we avoided this and went for 'plain' - the less chemicals the better. Omlet recommend a 5cm depth in your run or approx 600 litres. I used about 7 sacks to start off in a 12 feet by 6 feet run. I have not poo picked at all yet. The 2 girls free range all the time so there is not much mess in the run. I simply hose off any obvious mess on the woodchip. All seems very clean, dry , and hygienic. We have had them on wood chip for a month now and it is as clean as the day it went down. We are very pleased. As are the girls they love digging in the woodchip. (I have posted some pictures of the set-up in the gallery in the album 'Princess Fiona and Hannah'). I hope this helps? Lera
I use the FSC bark chippings from B&Q - I like these because very suitable for spreading on the garden afterwards!
