AMO
OMG! I can't believe what just happened! I'm working from home today and have let the girls out to free range as I won't be home this evening. The garden was full of starlings raiding the bird table as usual when, all of a sudden, some sort of hawk/eagle looking thing swooped down into the garden and landed on our wooden arch. Much flapping going on as the girls took cover under the garden bench - it all happened so quickly I don't even think it managed to grab one of the starlings before it flew off again as they all squawked and have now disappeared. The girls look terrified and it has taken a good 15 minutes to get them out from under the bench and they are very cautiously venturing back into the flowers beds - currently huddled under the hosta. I think I will put them away now but this has certainly made me think twice about leaving them out when I can't see them. We have lived here five years and never seen a bird of prey anywhere near the garden! I'll give the girls a few treats to calm them down and then find something a bit stronger for me! Dancing Gal
Scary huh. We have buzzards flying over all the time, they are quite common around here nowadays. One day one caught a pigeon and started savaging in our back garden. I'm a bit concerned that when we get the girls they may be at risk. Just got to hope they run for cover as quick as your birds. Hazel_L
we have a resident sparrowhawk that's been known to intercept young pigeons and murder them in our back garden... eeek AMO... least your girls are OK though
susiepoos
One of my neighbours told me last night that she had seen a sparrow hawk in her garden and it had caught a pigeon and decimated it - next door to her had a similar incident - do you think they'd attack a chicken? I'd have thought they would be too big for them?
The Dogmother
That's worrying AMO, give the girls a hug from me and have a lie down yourself.
