Pest control

I personally don't like using bait boxes - we have a lot of other wildlife as well as neighbours cats and I would hate for them to be affected by eating a poisoned rat.

I got myself an air rifle and kept on top of the population that way. I haven't seen a rat for a while now - quite effective.

We  have bait boxes from Amazon that hold a spring trap.  We took away the poison versions.  We have had most success with spring traps that were smeared with peanut  butter and cheese and onion crisps.   The bait boxes keep the traps safe from some wildlife,  children, pets and your free-ranging chickens.  Think ours are Roshield.  We got the traps and boxes as a kit.  If you do put traps down they have to stay down in the same place  baited but unset for a few days until the rats consider them a safe food source.   At that point you can set them and you should get the rat after a night or two
