my (almost) complete new coop/run-what do you think?

Recommended Posts

okay, DH built it yesterday from flat pack, the bit in front of the covered part of the run will be fenced off so they can walk right thru from the coop to the bit of garden.

It's in front of our conservatory so we can sit and watch them.

We, well DH to be exact, had to chop a tree down (a massive laurel) to give them that bit of garden space. He couldn't get the stump out so covered it with breeze blocks and a bit of decking wood, just in case the wood is poisonous or anything. He's growing some grass seed in a seedling tray and will put that in for them to nibble at.

We'll put the other feed trays in the covered part of the run.

DH still needs to put the perspex on the roof and use some of it as a kick board.

The bottom edge of the coop needs a bit of a skirt adding, so nothing can crawl underneath and into the run. I think a bit of wood on the bottom side of the coop where the door is? Not sure why the designers didn't do this or am I worrying too much?

Thanks for posting the pics. I'm envious that you've managed to get them in the post rather than just a link.

It makes it clearer (the foxy thread) as to what the mesh can look like. Yours looks far more substantial than mine.

That said, my farmer neighbour kindly put some new electric fencing up which should keep the fox at bay. Its really there to stop the horses pushing the fence over. He's put it right along the top of the fence. So fox has to scale a 4 foot electric fence, 4 foot of trellis fence, a run with chicken wire and then the coop if its night, all this with a labrador and a 12bore trained on the pitch. I might put my valuables in with the chooks when its all finished :!:

Thanks for the post the run looks lovely. Bet you can't wait.

Its agonising!

Loz

Ps I was working in Birmingham today (first time away since chooks arrived) and spent all spare time on the web looking at pictures of my new chickens. This is not normal. They were still asleep when I left and were tucked up when I got home and I'm not happy!

er - sorry, I think you'll find it is perfectly normal! Didn't you read the warning posted on the bottom of the Omlet website - 'chicken keeping is addictive and can seriously damage your bank balance'?
