Lesley
Yes it was - the biggest and the one doing the pecking! I want one!
The Dogmother
I saw a buff orpington once, and they are ENORMOUS - all feathers!
DonnaS
Hi there. My dad phoned (after the fact...) and told me he had seen the lecture. He had only just checked the omlet site and knew what Eglus were so was very pleased to see on on telly! Re Orpingtons - sounds like I missed something there. In fact it was a Buff Orpington that got me onto chooks for the first time last August. Indulge me with the quick story please.. I was on holiday in Cornwall with my family last (15 months ago) August - and very luckily ( ) managed to get shot of the rest of my family for one day so that I could wonder around the Lost Gardens of Heligan by myself. It was a glorious day and I thoroughly enjoyed the peace and quiet. I explored pretty much everywhere - but came to the orchard last. Next to the orchard was a lovely tea house/garden, so I sat outside, next to the orchard fence, and was utterly enchanted by the chooks that were roaming around the orchard. I made a note of their names - Welsummer, Wyandotte, Leghorn, Light Sussex, Marrans, Norfolk Grey, RIR, but only wrote notes on one of them - the BUFF ORPINGTON - which was quoted as "excellent layer of large brown eggs. V. laid back personality and make good pets." And I was smitten. The Blue Buff sounds lovely. I know that there are breeders between Bristol and Exeter - so my time (or their time!) may yet come! Thank you for indulging me my story of chooks in Cornwall. Do go to the Lost Gardens if you get a chance. Cheers. Donna
Cate in NZ
A lovely story Donna I'd love to visit Heligan, never been there, but now I'm even more tempted if they have chickens roaming around. I've only ever seen Buff Orpingtons in a picture, and it's just not the same as the real thing, but they do look like very handsome creatures
chocchick
Maybe they could make a GIGANTIC buff orpington eglu? I bet they would scare off cats!
The Dogmother
It might be a vicious rumour, but I think someone hinted on the forum that there was a bigger Eglu in the pipeline...
chocchick
Bigger as in bigger chickens, or more chickens? Cheaper (excuse pun) would be good as my whole back garden could be take over with little "herds" of chickens. Maybe it's better that they remain at that price.... The Dogmother
I assumed that it meant bigger as in more chickens, but I might be wrong - it's been known Mel is wanting to get one of each colour so that they can have a rainbow
DonnaS
Maybe they could make a GIGANTIC buff orpington eglu? I bet they would scare off cats! What a very good idea. James? James? Are you listening James? I'd have one. Please note that Barbara told me today that Orps are just too big for the Eglu right now - so we'll just have to visit them on farms. Here's a taster of what I might see on saturday: http://dtbcentre.co.uk/orpington.htm Ooh! They have them as bantams...... Now, THAT'S an idea!!!! Cheers. Louise
Bill in France has 2 in an eglu full size ones and there is a photo album somewhere maybe a wand waver can find them and put in a link
Mrs Frugal
Oh goodness Louise! That's going back a bit!! I'll have to try and find it. If you look on the Omlet chicken guide, it says that the heavy breeds are too large for the Eglu and Orps are one of the largest breeds. I should think Bill's chickens are a bit on the snug side - no need for duvets for his girls ! Orpington bantams - mmmm, that's tempting though! The Dogmother
="DonnaSOoh! They have them as bantams...... Now, THAT'S an idea!!!! Cheers. D Oh no! Now I want one - the only thing putting me off was the size (ooo err missus). They look a bit like my pekin bantam Layla, she is the same shape but in miniature and has lovely explosions of fluff from her bloomers - fluffy legs too. I haven't taken a picture of her recently, but must get some up on the galllery. If you do a websearch you will find some pix of some. They come in all sorts of colours too, there is a lavender that looks like the blue orpington. Here's a pic of Layla when she was littler - she's more fluffy and bigger now. The Dogmother
Ah, but aren't we missing a violet? Several people seem to want a violet or purple one. Except whoever it was who wanted a cow print one . My BF loves cow print too and I usually end up buying her something 'cow-ey' that I have seen .
