xChicken04x
Hiya! We got Clover (Jasmine) on the 1st September. She was very small when we got her (despite being 21 weeks) because she was not getting enough food as she was at the bottom of the pecking order in a feild of about 50 chickens so she didnt get the chance to eat properly. She also had a bite mark of some sort on her back where it looked as if she had been chased by a dog or something (there where quite a few there) Since we got her she has put on weight and has been spoilt rotton! She isnt laying yet (the lady said she would lay between 24-26 weeks she, is now 28-29 weeks) Her comb is still quite small though. I have seen a few breeds like her and they all have huge combs dangling over their faces, but Clovers is very small in comparison. Do you think she is just a late devolper? I'm worried there is something wrong. Here is some piccies for you. She looks evil because she was eyeing up my gold nail varnish! Also as soon as i bought the camera out she went bright red ! She is usually very pale looking! Anyway any advise on why her comb is so small would be appreciated! xx
Egluntyne
Well, her comb, wattles and face are red....all good signs, but her comb is very small. Maybe she just needs a few more weeks? Is she crouching yet? Have you considered the possibility that she might be a chap? Your pictures don't show her feet. Are they big for her size and has she got spurs? Has she got a very loud voice? I reckon the shorter days and her poor start are to blame. You might not get much out of her until spring. I love her topknot.
The Pearsons
I'm not sure she was as old as you were told..... she still looks young to me. Princess had a very small comb just like Clover when we got her but about three weeks before she came into lay the comb just grew like Tospy.... I think Princess, a Skyline, is the same sort of cross as your Clover Jasmine. Princess has the same spiked comb and punk hairdo!!!! Actually they look like the could be sisters. Why don't you give the place you got her from a call? BUT I bet she comes into lay on your birthday (a little bird told me it is soon)
xChicken04x
Hiya thank you both for the replies! An egg for my brithday would be great I dont think she is a boy.....she is very quiet, never says a word. Her feet and legs are very skinny with no spurs but they do have a blue tinge to them . I would hate to think she is a boy...I've grown very attached to her. She isnt crouching yet , she just runs away I think its more than likley that Garden Poultry gave us the wrong age. I cant blame them though, they have loads of hens to look after and it wouldnt suprise me if they got a bit mixed up. Thank you very much for the help, I might email Garden Poultry tomorrow and see if I can get any answers. xx
The Dogmother
I agree, she looks younger than you were told. Bird mature slower at this time of the year too - my pure breed banties that I got at the end of August are very slow now; I doubt I'll see any eggs out of them this side of Christmas. xChicken04x
Hiya, thank you Clare, for the advise as well I was just wondering how old you think she is? She looks really young to me now that you have all mentioned it........ When first got her she looked small compaired to the others, she is bigger now but not that much xx
The Dogmother
I'd need a picture showing more of her physique to be able to judge that - sorry.
Egluntyne
One of my girls, Nugget, is much smaller than the others, but was reputed to be the same age. She started to lay a bit later, so I suspect that she was a few weeks younger. Her size hasn't held her back...she's a bossy little madam. xChicken04x
Thank you all for your replies! Here are a few more pictures of Clover: When we first got her, she had baby feathers on her back Sorry they aren't very good piccies, Clover isnt very photogenic xx
The Dogmother
She's still got some baby fluff behind her tail... not easy to tell, but I'd guess at about 16-18 weeks She's very pretty though.
xChicken04x
Thank you for that! Poor little thing, being put into a run with girlies about 13 weeks older than her! The second picture is on the first day we got her, we thought the feathers where just growing back after the bite she got. They have pretty much gone now and she has got "big girl" feathers. Oh well, she is gorgeous all the same! Thank you again for taking the time to help me! xx

redfrock
oh wow she is a beauty! I just want to pick her up and give her a cuddle! My girls combs seem to vary enourmously in size. Now I wonder if Ben stocks Jasmine's ...... (I've just sold all my motorbike clothing - was going to use the money to buy myself some rather sexy new specs (if specs can ever be sexy ) but ...) xChicken04x
Awww thank you! Its such a shame though because she has the nicest personality but the other chooks dont seem to like her We are seriously considering getting "Clover the sequal" because she is so lovley! She is supposed to be flighty, i considered that to be a chicken who darts everywhere and doesnt like being picked up. But she loves cuddles (and anything shiney) Every morning when i clean the poo trays and hose down the roosting bars Clover is there, tugging at my jeans She is a great flyer though, she is always on top of the cube Anyway, I will stop writing about her and posting pictures, i think I have bored you all enough ! Thank you again! xx
Egluntyne
Every morning when i clean the poo trays and hose down the roosting bars Clover is there Blimey...you put most of us to shame. I do mine twice a week.

I just cant bare the smell, looking through the egg port at night and getting a whiff of chicken poop It is getting harder with the darker mornings though. xx
Edge Wife
Hello, Flo is bottom of my pile of three. She has a much less developed comb than the other two: she was the last to lay and is the smallest. I think it is part and parcel of being bottom of the pecking order. We've had our chooks since May and it's only in the past few weeks that I've noticed a real difference in Flo's comb. Otherwise she seems healthy and happy. Clover is really pretty. It's probably due to her nice 'personality' that the others take advantage and have a go at her. x
Rhapsody
My Bizmillah has a tiny comb too, about the size of your chook's, she was a late addition to the flock and lays small eggs as well.
xChicken04x
Thank you! I'm glad to know there is nothing to worry about. I keep sneaking up on Clover to see if she crouches but she doesnt, she just squeals and runs xx

Princess is also suposed to be flighty as she refused to eat from our hands until she came into lay. Now she is near the front of the line when there are treats in the offing. Princess has gone from bottom of the pecking order to mid-place so there is hope for Clover. Jasmines are pretty aren't they? The hair do is to die for!
