"fox proof" ?

Recommended Posts

Hi clareyc

When the lovely Omlet man dropped off my eglu and run a couple of weeks ago he told me that the run was fox proof if the skirt was in constant contact with the ground. If the ground is not level and the skirt of the run can move a bit then a fox will suss out that he needs to dig away from the shirt to get under it.

For this reason, I have used some old tent pegs to secure my run skirt tightly to the ground.

From what I've read on here, there are a couple of weak points to the run.

1 The fox may try to dig where the run joins the eglu itself, although you can now get extra skirting mesh to put under this area.

2 if a hen presses against the mesh a fox can grab enough of a mouthful to damage/kill the hen (very rare, but has been known)

3 Foxes have tried to get in through the door and managed to break the clips holding it on, although it didn't manage to get in.

There may be other stories but I can't remember them :D

I would say that the Cube /Eglu is Fox proof if the door is shut. The run is good but only Fox resistant, albeit very resistant.

I think as the run is held together with chewoffable plastic clips then it is possible for a Fox to get in if determined enough.

I remember reading an account on here where a fox attempted to get in by chewing off the plastic hinges to the run door and was almost successfull.

Don't underestimate a Fox or you may be unpleasantly suprised.

I think the Omlet run is safe, better than most, but not 100% Foxproof unfortunately.
