herecomethegirls
My chicks are now 10 weeks old and I would like to let them free range, but don’t want them flying away! At what age can I clip their wings? Is it best to wait?
Cat tails
When they get their “adult” feathering, you can technically clip their wings. Some say you shouldn’t clip their wings till they are fully grown as it might affect their growth as you only clip one wing and not the other. At 10 weeks they still have some growing to do and although they won’t loose or grow more feathers, their feather will still change a bit. Personally I would wait a week or 2. When you are ready to clip their wings, remember to only do one wing. Only clip the long flight feathers and don’t cut them shorter than the shorter cover feathers. I use a cat nail clipper for this as I find normal scissors tend to slide over the feathers.
Beantree
Makes a much neater job if you don't cut the first two, which are the two shown already cut on the video frame above. It has no effect on the flight inability but means the cut feathers can't be seen when the hen is walking around.
