Christmas Turkey. Warning - upsetting

Recommended Posts

So don't worry about the size (size doesn't matter  ), I'm happy with whatever they grow to. It's quality not quantity too!

:lol: Never thought I'd hear you say that Ginette!

Oh dear! :( Do I have a reputation?

:lol:8)

:?::?::?

It is a very worrying article because you buy what you think is free range or organic but you just can't tell. I'm getting a Kelly's turkey which for a small 4kg bird is costing just over £40. I know he is trialling keeping his turkeys in free ranging in woods with dogs for protection. Now that is more natural :)

Horrible.

It makes me glad to be a vegetarian.

Welcome to the forum eggsfactor - great name!

I am vegetarian too - we are catering for 6 veggies and 6 meat eaters on Christmas day. OH is repsonsible for the meat.

When I asked him what sort of turkey he was getting he said 'organic' - then he ordered one from somewhere near where he works and I don't think it is organic or even free-range. I have been very cross with him for a week but he has other things on his mind so I can't get through to him. I need to show him this.

My mother doesn't care Tina - she thinks I am just being difficult and wanting 'special food'. I have said, that it just needs to be freerange but she insists on buying the cheapest meat going - I just eat veggie at theirs... which she calls 'difficult' again

She just doesn't get the whoe thing and insists that freerange or organic is the same meat, just more expensive.

I gave up ages ago!

We take it in turns to have Christmas lunch at my parents or DH's and I know neither sets of parents buy free range turkey but DH won't even let me open my mouth about it, so I'll have to eat what's put in front of me and put up and shut up :(

.

Don't worry about it, it can be a difficult situation when somebody serves you a meal containing meat which is blatently not free range and therefore against your ethics. I just eat it, knowing that I am doing all I can to spread the word elsewhere.

Tell that to my stomach Martin, I hope it doesn't rebel :vom:

I am upset about the whole thing but I can't let it ruin everyone's Christmas cos that's what'll happen if I say anything. I wish we could host Christmas at our house, then I'd have control, but our house is too small.

I'm definitely buying my mum's turkey next year, she just usually buys a turkey crown from Morrisons I think, but I doubt it's free range. My parents are 80 and 75 and I did broach the subject of 'free range' with my mum but she says she's too old to be bothered checking ingredients on everything she buys :(

At least I can make sure her eggs are free range as we supply them but I think she did actually buy free range eggs before anyway, just not free range poultry.

The best way round it Poet is to just put a small piece of the offending (offensive?) meat on your plate, push it around a bit and then hide it under some odd bits of veggies. Even better if they use paper napkins - dump that on top............

....... and smile through gritted teeth  It's just not worth the hassle of arguing on Christmas Day is it

You could always pretend to be ill and ask for the tiniest portion. Much easier to fling into the aspidistra when no-ones looking.

Or ring in advance an explain that you have recently become a vegetarian...and as you don't want to put them to any extra trouble.....you''ll bring a veggie dish with you....for anyone to share.
