Guest
Does anyone own one of these? http://www.funkybirdbox.co.uk Just wondering what the build quality is like. They look a bit 'bright', but they say that there are advantages to this!
Lesley
I presume the Reliant is for robins?
Mrs Blue Sky
Ooh! I need those! They look LOVELY I'll put in for some for my royal birthday cheers grd
Cinnamon
I like those....they would certainly brighten up the garden Wonder if the paint will fade & peel though
The Dogmother
They are fab But I've given up with bird boxes - my naughty eldest cat is partial to tiny fledglings , and it just isn't fair to the birdies. I gave my last one to the folks, who have loads of bird visitors to their garden. So we get to watch the birds when we visit.
Popcorn
We've got one of those - or similar - and not one bird has used it! We had some blue tits take a bit of an interest last year, but they had a look round and bought elsewhere! Mind you Clare - I never gave the fact that we have a cat a second thought. Might be something to do with it
Guest
I think I'll get one (or two), just to see.
Cate in NZ
They look fab, but I think I'll resist. The last bird box we owned somehow became home to a swarm of wasps- we wondered for a while why we had so many wasps coming in the kitchen window, then spotted them all moving in and out of the bird box. Bit of a pain
Guest
It looks like they're made out of plywood, with (rather thin) cladding for the roof. The RSPB give some good plans for one here http://www.rspb.org.uk/birds/whatyoucando/nestboxes/making.asp so I might modify them a bit and make my own funky variety. Guest
I'm thinking, you wouldn't be able to fit too many chickens in them......

Guest
Our next door neighbours have various bird boxes dotted round their garden but they get constantly shunned, while the little hole in the eves of our roof is a constant bird squat throughout the year! Sheilaz
I presume the Reliant is for robins? It was worth reading this thread just for that! Oh, and the bird boxes, Graham, but I prefer the plain ones, which the bluetits do use in our garden. The only exception to not having colourful biord boxes, for me, is the Eglus! & then I chose green But, making your own sounds a good idea, & you could try the colours. The Dogmother
I think I'll get one (or two), just to see. Hey Graham, maybe your mice will live in the bird boxes rather than your roof!
Guest
I think I've got rid of them all now, but I felt horrible about doing it. grd: Mouse Slayer....
Guest
grd: Mouse Slayer.... We had mice in this house when we first moved in - the used to run over our feet at night when we were watching the telly. They had no fear - until we introduced them to Mog the Mouser
The Dogmother
Did you find where they got in Graham? It is astonishing how they can get through the smallest hole The cold weather drives them into houses, so it'll need bunging up. Shona Over your feet . Luckily my two cats love catching mice, but they sometimes bring in live ones, then lose interest, so I have to catch them and put them out
Louise
I have three highly efficient mouse slayers too Don't feel bad grd once you have zapped a few thousand the feeling of guilt will wear off
Guest
No, I didn't find out where they got in... more of the same next year I guess. I am still feeling bad about it - they were lovely velvet little things and I had killed them. But they were ransacking our food cupboard. Guest
Mice wee as they run, grd, spreading it around - they are NOT nice velvety little things at all! Yopu can borrow Mog the Mouser if they come back!
The Dogmother
I must say that I think they are gorgeous, but I would be more inclined to think like Shona if theye were living in my house.
Guest
They are as good as they look - we had a family check in within a couple of days, so the colours do attract + you notice them more and get to see all the activity. They lasted ok in our garden, colours didnt fade.
