pelicano
The vitamin C doesn't help my hair at all (might even dry it a little, but nothing drastic). I have sehorrheic dermatitis on my scalp (basically v bad dandruff), and the conventional way of dealing with it is with harsh shampoos and steroids - none of that for me!! Ain't Nobody Here
Ah, right . I hope the Vitamin C works for you then .
pelicano
Thanks! It's going really well so far, and I really had reached despair over it (constant itch, flakes everywhere etc). Hope your hair cut goes well tomorrow. Am sure it will make you feel better about your hair, as it will feel all smooth at the ends.
Mutrix Farmers
I'm quite intrigued by the no shampoo idea. I suffer with a flaky, itchy scalp sometimes. I only wash my hair once a week which helps. Don't like the sound of week 5 much but I might give it a go as my hair has never been really greasy. ANH and Bron - you both have lovely hair. pelicano
Definitely worth a try. Especially as you don't shampoo it frequently now. I think you'd find it pretty easy.
Keanie Bean
How is everyone going on this. I just couldnt cope with the grease so I have done something pretty radical. I've dreaded my hair. Its all in very tight plaits with the ends secured with special hair bands. I had to get something to keep it in from a special afro carribean hair shop. It was organic but not paraben free unfortunately. A friend of mine from work is going to get me some beeswax which I have to rub into it each week. This time next year I should have a lovely head of dreads which I dont have to wash with anything except water and mayb some soapnut shampoo and it wont look absolutley minging. pelicano
Wow, that is radical! I have been continuing to try all sorts of things. I read that the only way to get rid of silicones on the hair was to shampoo them out with an SLS shampoo. I hadn't used an SLS shampoo for about 2 years, so thought I probably had a build up of silicones. So, on one of my occasional shampoos (every few weeks), I used a clarifying shampoo. It didn't dry it out as much as I thought it might, just as a one-off. I also started using a lot of silicone-free conditioner, to try to get my ends in better condition. Trouble is, that has made my scalp flare right up again, despite not actually putting it on my scalp! I also tried doing things like not combing or brushing it, to try to encourage my natural curls, but with curls come frizz. I gave in and combed it a lot yesterday, and it was a lot smoother. So... now I'm water only again, and putting a pomade type thing on (from Comfort and Joy), to try to condition it. Will see what happens... Sorry for epic post! Louise
I made a huge mistake at the weekend After spending the morning in the garden strimming I decided a nice bath was in order and because I was so grubby I added a little (about a tablespoon) of bubble bath to the water I shouldn't use it at all with my skin but I wanted to be clean and I didn't want a huge tide mark round the edge of the bath either I jumped in and forgot there was soap in the water and washed my hair as well I rinsed afterwards but it has been awfull all week really frizzy and I had horrid dandruff on Monday morning and my scalp was very itchy It wasn't much soap so hopefully it will settle down again quite quickly but I must remember never to do that again
Ain't Nobody Here
Amazing that one wee wash with soap causes all that grief . I don't get bothered by grease but still have frizzy hair after nearly 8 months . I tried spraying heat protect spray on it this morning and going for the messy rather than combed look - not bad so far! Might keep it up. My main bugbear is my hair getting on my face - 'cos it's so dry it tickles and really annoys me so I have to use clips (I feel like a school girl ). Olly
I've been following the no-shampoo thing with interest, love the idea but my hair is really fine, gets greasy really quickly and I have to look smart for work = just don't have the guts to go for it. I've washed it every day for the last 30 years. However - after going at the price, I bought some organic shampoo a month or so ago, and have been using it. I didn't notice any difference, in fact I felt a bit uncomfortable because it doesn't leave my hair 'squeaky' clean like other shampoos. I'm so stingy however that I was determined to use it up, as it cost so much! Just catching up on this thread above, and I thought 'hmm, my hair doesn't seem as greasy as it used to - I can get away without washing it every day. It must be my age'. It's only just occurred to me that this change has happened SINCE I started using the organic shampoo! I didn't know what SLS was until I read this thread. Not convinced I could go for the whole no 'poo thing, but I am definitely going to stick with SLS free in future! PS Bron and ANH, your hair looks lovely. Lesley
I have short, very fine, hair as well Olly - I couldn't face thge first few months of 'No Poo' either....... I use mostly SLS free shanpoo now, use a tiny, tiny amount, and wash my hair twice a week instead of four times a week. Any move in the right direction is good I think....... pelicano
I have come to the conclusion that I just plain HATE MY HAIR!!! AAAARGH!!! It was nice having high hopes at the beginning of this little project, but there is just no taming it!! Not that I'm suggesting I'm going back to shampoo - I just need to accept that my hair is a frizzy mop.
The Dogmother
Sarah.. in a thread somewheer about eczema I have mentioned a coconut hair 'dressing' (totally natural) by Palmers. this is great at taming frizzy hair (it's designed for afro-caribbean hair) and leaves it beautifully silky. You only need a tiny amount though.
pelicano
Ooh thanks for that - I've found it. Will give it a go.... I wonder if I have to order online or whether I can buy it in a shop somewhere.
The Dogmother
It's hard to find in shops unless you live in an are with a west indian population. I used to buy it when I lived in London, but now I order it directly from Brownes in the UK - they have an order form and are very generous with samples. I find that it soothes my eczema too, take a small amount and warm it up between your hands first. it goes a really long way. Too much and your hair will be lank. When I travelled in Arica, I had very long hair; I coated it in this and plaited it as I wasn't able to wash it often. When I wanted to wash it out, I used neat shampoo on it first. The Dogmother
I'm a tester for Naked Bodycare, and they've just sent me samples of a new 'sensitive' hair care range.. shampoo and conditioner.. I will be reporting back to you on how I find it. It's all SLS free etc.

Keanie Bean
Well the dreads thing really works. I havent had to wash my hair with water at all since last Tuesday, and you just cant tell any difference. Its the only way I'm ever going to be happy with my hair, but obviously not everyones cup of tea. Sarah.x
Ain't Nobody Here
Well, I think I've reached the end of my tether hair-wise. I'm contemplating getting it cut short . I'm fed up with the frizz (still, after 9 months no shampoo ), fed up with it flopping in my face (can't bear the feeling), and fed up with the general pain it is to keep. And I can't even get it to look nice . I always used to have short hair which used to grow upwards when it got longer . I'm thinking I'll just go back to that and use straighteners or lotions and potions to tame it. I'm going to wait till school finishes (end of June), then at least no-one from work will see me for 7 weeks or so (if it's a disaster ). pelicano
I was thinking of you only today, and wondering if your hair is curly/frizzy like mine. I've found that if I towel dry my hair in a different way I get slightly less frizz (slightly anyway!) and more curl. http://www.jessicurl.com/Demo-Videos-p-6.html Check out the 'plunking' video on the link if you're interested. I'm soldiering on with my hair. It's not toooooo bad at the moment. Still frizzy, but not so bad. Also, the vitamin c is starting to colour my hair - at the moment it's going a lovely golden blonde (rather than dishwater colour). I just hope it doesn't go too brassy, as the vitamin c really helps my scalp.
Ain't Nobody Here
Thanks, Pelicano I've watched the video - I'll give it a go but my hair's not that long so don't know if it'll work . I've also been trying not to towel dry my hair - or comb the water out of it after a shower. It seems to break off leaving lovely dry short frizzy bits which really helps the sleek look, not . Trouble is, leaving my hair very wet means it takes ages to dry - so I have to plan when I wash it and not go anywhere (although I have been known to go dog walking or to the shops with soaking wet hair - it's not like I ever dress up to go to Morrisons after all ). The Dogmother
Just a thought, but would it help to use a microfibre towel so that it doesn't need to be rubbed so much?
pelicano
I can never get over how similar we sound on these posts. I get so fed up with going out with wet hair etc too. Before I started the 'plunking', I was just letting it drip dry with a towel on my shoulders - yuk, it takes forever. I have a microfibre towel (which I'm using for the 'plunking'). My hair is shoulder length. I have to say, it helped far more than I thought it would - I still don't really understand why it's so different to rolling it up in a turban, but it seems to be.
