Ain't Nobody Here
That's good news . I'm glad you've found something that works! I'm well over a year without shampoo now . Still works well using just "hot water washing", conditioning, then a mousse or potion of some sort and air drying. Haven't used the straighteners since I had my hair cut short. I may just try that shampoo though as I still feel a bit that I don't actually "wash" my hair.
pelicano
Might be worth a go - it's quite expensive, but the small 'tester' tube isn't. Ooh it's fabby stuff!
bronze
I've resorted to using my childrens halos and horns shampoo
mostin
Ooh I'm excited! After falling off the sans shampoo waggon, I've tried a few things out, and I've found the mildest shampoo ever! This is it (hope the link works): http://www.soorganic.com/product.php?productid=1145&cat=161&page=1 All I do now is wash with that, then use lime juice to acidify (then rinse), and I don't need any conditioner or oil afterwards (considering how dry my hair is, that is some achievement). My hair looks better than it ever has, including when I wasn't using shampoo. I bought the tester bottle of this as I wasn't quite ready to go shampoo free as I have such greasy hair , I do like this shampoo though. Today though I used it for a different purpose , one of my chickens needed a bath as her bottie was in a bit of a mess. It was the mildest shampoo I could find in the house. She didn't complain at all and it brought her feathers up lovely and clean and fluffy .
pelicano
Sounds a great use for it! I might try it on the guinea pigs actually, as it's very mild. For my own hair, I've got myself into a routine now of using that shampoo every 3 days, and water washing in between.
Guest
I'm feeling a bit pleased about my hair for a change. I went to the hairdresser just before Christmas, taking my own Faith in Nature Seaweed shampoo and conditioner. I'm always impressed with how clean my hair is afterwards and think it must be to do with the thoroughness of the wash I receive there. Because of a stupid accident just before I went to the hairdresser, I am unable to take showers (since 12th December ) and I just hate washing my hair over the basin. I have been leaving it for 10 days before washing and then being extra thorough with washing and rinsing. So I washed my hair on Boxing Day and again on 3rd January ( Oh, that's 8 days, no wonder I wasn't sure it needed it!) and it's been absolutely fine. Even when I'm better and can take showers again, I'm going to try to stick to 10 day gaps.
pelicano
I so wish I could leave mine longer between washes. If it wasn't for my dandruff I could - my hair doesn't get particularly greasy anymore. There was one week where I felt really ill, and didn't wash my hair (even without shampoo) for 4 days, and my hair looked the best it ever had! pelicano
Has anyone tried experimenting with water temperature at all? I got the Lush catalogue through today (don't know why they send it to me - I never buy anything! ), and there is a tip suggesting that washing your hair with hot water is akin to damaging it with hairdrying/straightening etc, and that it should be luke warm. I wash my hair in the temperature that I have the shower (which is increasingly hot due to the weather).
Merryn
I am still happy with not using shampoo for over 2 years now. I use just water - as hot as I can stand and for conditioner, every 2 weeks or so, I use an egg. It's brilliant. I also always blow-dry my hair but it doesn't look heat damaged and has a great shine. Guest
Well done Merryn, that is SUCH good news. I am really pleased for you - and just a little bit !!
Merryn
I don't think about it now and Hubby has taken to it as well. So we don't have any shampoo in the house (annoys visitors!). Only one sad thing about my life, Ginette, is that you may have noticed that I don't have chickens any more. Henna died recently and since we hadn't had any eggs from either of them for 7 months, I went off the idea as I really don't like caged pets - as lovely as my two were. I took Penna to a nearby farm that re-homes hens and we have a very keen neighbour who is taking the eglu soon. I miss the hens but I don't miss all the cleaning chores and getting up early in the cold mornings to let them out! All the best
pelicano
Am seriously impressed at 2 years without shampoo! The longest I went was 4 months. Am happy to stick to occasional shampooing, but I just wish I could get away with occasional washing too (ie rather than regular water washing). I just got in the shower and washed it, and it looked so nice just before I got in! Itched like anything though! Am interested to hear that you use v hot water. Ain't Nobody Here
I'm still "sans shampoo" 15 months on (apart from maybe once every couple of months or so or before a haircut) . I use shower temperature hot water too and loads of conditioner, then mousse and leave it to dry naturally. I use Potion 9 (extortionate cream stuff from the hairdressers inbetween if it's getting frizzy) or very cheap coconut conditioning spray from Boots . Not that happy with my hair at present though so think I might try the egg . Is there a technique? Do you just beat it up and massage it in? Hot water to rinse off or does that cook it ? Sorry to hear about your hens, Merryn .

Sorry to hear about your hens, Merryn . Thank you. But back to your hair - I am concerned that you are putting 'loads of' conditioner and mouse on. Surely these are more chemicals that imbalance the natural oils in your hair? Egg is really easy - I just beat it up a bit and then, after wetting the hair, I pour it on in small amounts and massage in. Leave it for a couple of mins and rinse off. The water isn't hot enough to cook it or else my head would cook too!

It would certainly cost less .
Guest
Merryn, I am really sorry to hear about your hens. Your neighbour is very lucky to have an experienced minder so close by though! I'm sure you'll be popping round regularly for visits.
Tiggy
my hair is much better without shampoo except when I go swimming, how does everyone deal with the chlorine problem?
pelicano
Has anyone used semi permanent hair colour without or with occasional shampooing? I really need to do something with my hair colour (much as it will play havoc with the scalp), and I wonder what will happen to the colour with water washes. The Dogmother
Has anyone used semi permanent hair colour without or with occasional shampooing? I really need to do something with my hair colour (much as it will play havoc with the scalp), and I wonder what will happen to the colour with water washes. My guess is that the colour will last longer Sarah. I did the no shampoo thing for a bit then went onto using non-SLS shampoos and washing it less. I have permanent colour in my hair (it's nearly white underneath!) and apart from the inevitable roots, they always comment on how long the colour has lasted. Guest
Yes, I find it takes very well and seems to last too.
Ain't Nobody Here
This thread's been a bit quiet recently . Just wanted to report that I've gone back to using shampoo. After over a year and a half, I didn't find it made any difference to the dryness or frizziness of my hair. I kept waiting for silky lustrous locks but it never happened . pelicano
Yes, I'm the same really. I find that I only have to shampoo about once a week now, but I never got the lustrous locks either! What seems to work best for me is using a combination of shea butter and olive oil, just to coat the frizzies. This builds up after a week or so, so has to be shampooed out. pelicano
I typed that last post in a bit of a hurry (don't know why - it wasn't exactly an urgent update! ) I meant to say that I still have major scalp problems, and I have to water wash my hair virtually every day. I also find that it benefits from a regular weekly shampoo - I slap a load of olive oil on my scalp and hair (sometimes some egg too - protein for the hair, which really softens it) and leave it for an hour before shampooing. I always get rid of the egg with cold water first though - I remember reading some horror stories about cooked egg in the hair!!! My husband has also switched to weekly shampoos with water washes in between too, which seems to work well for him too, so it's not all bad news. pelicano
Isn't it funny how you can go full circle on things?! I'm now using shampoo every day!! I use a tiny amount of a mild SLS-free one (I wasn't using SLS before I started this either), which I'm really finding is helping my scalp, ie just keeping it fresher is helping with the seborrheic dermatitis. I've not noticed any difference in the health or otherwise of my frizzy mop of hair so far between shampooing every day or not shampooing at all. I always put a bit of coconut oil and shea butter on when it's sopping wet and allow it to drip dry (I have a towel draped over my shoulders at the moment). That's been more important than anything in improving the way it looks - not shampooing did nothing.
Merryn
Hi everyone, me after a long time! Just to say that Hubby and I are STILL not using shampoo after, 2 yrs now I think? I occasionally use a beaten egg and sometimes a vinegar rinse, but that is all and my hair is great! Who else hasn't got ANY shampoo in the house??!!
