feemcg
I hatched 6 SLW last year and was able to sex them at about 6 weeks. I sold 5 and kept 1 - I'd say she's kind of medium-sized, my Sussex are all much larger. Here's some SLW chick pics to keep you drooling and a wee CL girl
Jules.
Aw Fee thanks for the photos.... Ethan & Alexander are all out of "awwws" now- they have said it so much whilst looking at the chicks
bronze
My SLW werent my biggest hens and I don't have any fat cochins or anything. I actually found them some of the easiet to sex and our guesses as soon as they started gettign feathers were in fact correct. I gave my two LF away so someone got a bargain though it was on the condition they took my males too.
feemcg
Actually, in the 1st pic of the newborn chicks you can already see it's 1 boy, 1 girl - the pea comb is more defined and 'orangey'. By the pic at 2 1/2 weeks he's a definite boy - by his stance and his comb - the 5 girls had no comb develpoment at this age. By 5/6 weeks I was sure, as by that time the girls had their flat orangey combs but his was raised and red. The folk I've sold mine to have always had a bargain, Bron - I sell them for £10 or less ( I gave away 3 CL's on the same day someone on here bought some for £29 each ). Jules.
That's really interesting Fee about the sexing of SLW. With my uncultured eye even I can see the difference!
bronze
It seems so obvious when someone points it out doesnt it. When I first started (not long ago) I was so unsure but after being told which was which I learned to spot the differences. I can't say I get it right everytime especially from pics but it does get so much easier.
feemcg
I'm no expert either, Bron (especially in the case of Big Sandy, the Buff Orp, who didn't even raise any suspicion in me till 20+ weeks ).
The Dogmother
That's brilliant news Jules - Alexander will be so chuffed with 'his hen' Wyandottes are very pretty girls and have strong consitutions too. Perhaps your breeder will email you some photos.
