Help - I need a Dog!

Recommended Posts

I know that you can't choose a breed, but Schnauzers come in different sizes, they don't smell at all, or shed hair, and are reliable working dogs with great characters.

Have to agree with you there Clare. Our neighbour has a big one called Boris, and he is lovely. We asked about the hair thing, and they don't shed hair at all, and are rather cute into the bargain too. He's got a lovely temperament with the children, but does like to chase the cats if he manages to escape out the front door quick enough

Actually his name is Ming (as in the chinese china rather than Flash Gordon's arch enemy Ming the Merciless.........although come to think of it..........)

There were some photos in my album in the gallery, but I cant find it  I have been meaning to add photos of the newbies (not so new now, we've had them since October  )

I have tried, but it crashed and since then just havent got round to it. Dont know why, I'm always on the forum anyway

 Pedigree dogs (as Minky is (although I have another word for him  ) have their kennel club names, but all dogs that do agility have to have agility names - you can be boring and stick with their plain names but its fun to take the mick out of KC naming with the agility names Hence:

Totally True Blue

Cookie Boy Charlie

and

Tricky Wicky Minky Moo

Maxhens are far more sensible:

Rescue Me Henry

Archie Skye

and Pop be nimble

a friend has a jack russel called Buster and his agility name is Barnes Wallace Buster (as he tends to bounce off the walls!)

See, all very simple

Tricky Wicky Minky Moo

Sounds like an ickle cute handbag or laptop dog you would carry round and pet, and dress up in dog outfits. Does he jump little ickle agility fences then after being pampered in the grroming parlour for his special little show

Did they know the dog before naming him, they can't have done surely :? He sounds like the  incarnate.

Hi Lesley

At the risk of sounding quite serious if you don;t want a dog and you will be the one lookiing after him or her I would suggest you don't get one. As Mel has rightly pointed out I have three dogs - two of whom are rescue dogs. Rescue me Henry -Henry- was left outside in the garden by a well meaning couple who did no training of him and left him on his own and then wondered why he was raging out of control and becoming aggressive- he was BORED. he came to me with no boundaries but loves his life of long walks in ALL weathers and agility. An Advanced mini agility dog now who is competing at crufts next month in a major agility final. He is a jack russell> It always amazes me how people can talk about dogs as if they are lifestyle options - they aren;t!

I have another rescue dog - a collie abandoned in a twon centre one night aged 5 months old. She is a stunning agility dog too now - I competed with her in the Finals of the Novice KC agility stakes at Olympia with her just before christmas. That is Pop Be Nimble Pop Be Quick - Poppy - she will be three in April we think.

Another working breed dog - going mad from want of time. love and care, exercise and training. And almost certainly abandoned because she was out of control due to all that. She loves life now and goes up mountains with all of us and we are all out everyday walking.

I have not read all the forum entries on this thread so perhaps similar point s have been made.

A colleague of mine said her sons and husband wanted a dog but she mused it had to be a dog that left no hair, didn;t need walks, and came knowing that it had to stay in its basket all the time, would not need any time or attention from her but would know to wait til her sons and husband got home from being at school or work all day....Needless to say i put her off. Thankfully she has not succumbed.

I grew up with a mother who took on rescued dogs and have carried on. I feel very strongly about it. Any rescue place worth their salt will soon find out you do not really want a dog and will rightly refuse to rehome one with you - dogs from rescue have been screwed up enough and need LOTS of TLC as well as clear headedness to undo all the bad stuff (if you can) that has been inflicted before. I am not saying you will be cruel obviously - but indifference can be just as soul destroying to a dog. If your partner is prepared to put in the time and effort then fair enough but if he cannot - work commitments or he loses interest - then what?

As for living outside well yes they can - but they cannot jsut be left there. And responsible people who use kennels make sure their dogs get plenty of work and activity so kennels are a quiet retreat to rest - not a boring blank place to grow ever more frustrated in.

Dogs are far more needy than many people realise - they are utterly dependent on their owners for everything. And as with most relationships - the more you put in the more you will get back.Getting a puppy or non rescue/rehoming dog is a huge commitment too - as the people who owned Henry and Poppy found out.

Have gone back and read other forum messages and see that sarah said pretty much same as me and I now see that others know you better than I do or Sarah does obviously and that your comments were not too serious, more lighthearted really.

So apologies - if you read my previous message.

But I do feel very strongly about the subject (as Sarah does) and stuff like I saw at first really gets my blood up..........

One of the dogs my mpther took on - a border collie - had been kept on a chain for EIGHT years. He never recovered fully and devloped back problems a couple of years later for obvious reasons but we treid hard to give him the kind of life he should have had from the time we got him. I have a picture of him in front of me here on a beach being herded by another collie my mum had back then.

Grey hound rescue are kept very busy........
