yannovitch
bonjout tout le monde, i would like to know what would be the best compost to use when growing potatoes in a tub... i thought maybe of using my home made garden compost... would i need to add anything to it? have you got any advice? Christian
Lots of well rotten manure Yann, as potatoes are very greedy crops. Home made compost is ideal! Just keep topping up the soil over the green shoots, seems odd but really does increase your harvest
Eyren
Just keep topping up the soil over the green shoots, seems odd but really does increase your harvest I only found out why from reading my GYO magazine the other day The potatoes grow on thin stalks that develop from the main stem, not on the roots (which is where you would expect). So, if you're growing in a tub, it's best not to fill it up with compost at the start - just put enough in for the plant to grow a decent root system, and leave as much space as you can for earthing up, and you'll get lots more spuds! Cinnamon
Sooooooooo - if your home made compost isn't ready, can anyone recommend a good over the counter compost I can buy for my seed pots which are going into a big sack?
chickencam
We use a lot of the john innes ones because they have more substance than bog standard potting compost.
Cinnamon
OK, I will take a look. I use JI too, as its less 'fluffy' than your bog standard stuff
