Footie League & Banter

Recommended Posts

thankyou Helen 8)

This week was an interesting set of predictions...

honourable mention goes to Debs who achieved our first ever ZERO score (but generously scored 6 on behalf of Dan!!!!!!)

top-scorers were Clash - with 6 - and Dan (or Debs!) with 6

Emma scored a creditable 5

Annie and Martin a passable 4

Phil & Tom an average 3

Helen and Chelsea a rather poor 2...... (Helen - despite predicting well after kickoff time...)

so......

the final table is as follows:

Phil - 178

Helen - 174

Debs -164

Chelsea - 155

Martin – 152

Emma - 141

Clash – 138

Dan – 135

Tom - 120

Lorna - 98

Annie - 74

Ali - 58

Phil is indeed undisputed Prediction Princess with stunning back-to-back victories

he will have to do an new photo..............

Have you planned the route for your open top bus parade to the town hall yet?

If you need to borrow a bus try Chelsea, "Ooops, word censored!"nal or Villa as they won't be needing theirs this season.

clash

I hear there are a few buses 'not required' in West Bromwich as well

PS Well done from Dan and I as well Phil

P PS At least there is one thing I can't be beaten on next season, you can't go lower than zero :D

Some Bolton history rediscovered.......

A GRAVE in which Bolton Wanderers' founder the Rev John Farrall Wright was lain to rest is to be restored to the glory it deserves.

Preparations are underway for a service to re-dedicate the moss-covered grave, found at Christ Church, Walmsley, by churchwarden Judith Page last year.

The grave, which had lain unnoticed for 124 years, had been tracked down by author Peter Lupson whose book, Thank God For Football, explores the Christian roots

Mr Lupson said: "It was an amazing feeling to find it.

"Suddenly the person becomes real. They are not just a figure in a book and I found that quite moving."

Now a service is being planned to re-dedicate the site, restore the grave and add an inscription recognising Rev Wright as the founder of Bolton Wanderers.

He was the vicar of Christ Church in Deane Road, which no longer exists, and persuaded Tom Ogden, the headmaster of the nearby Christ Church School, to start a football club at the Sunday School.

Christ Church FC was formed in June 1874 but three years later became Bolton Wanderers.

The club got its name because it had no home ground of its own and played where it could.

Work will take place to straighten Rev Wright's grave, install a channel around it, clean the stone and rework the existing lettering.

An extra inscription will also be added, reading "Founder of Bolton Wanderers Football Club 1874".

A service will be held at the grave at Christ Church on June 27 at 11am to re-dedicate the site.

Those involved in the project are looking forward to the day.

Mr Lupson, who also found Mr Ogden's grave in an unmarked plot in Heaton Cemetery, said: "I feel immensely proud that my humble research has given him the recognition he deserves.

"I also have a great sense of relief that he will not be forgotten.

"The service will give him back to the town, which is important."

Simon Marland, club secretary for Bolton Wanderers added: "It was great news when the grave was found and now to be able to recognise our founder is fantastic.

"Before he was just a name and we didn't know much about him but now we have some new history."

So when are Trinity URC Wanderers playing their first match then Phil?!

Me and my friend Anna are organizing a church kick about on the village common this week - should be fun! 8)

Actually, during my degree we learnt a lot about the history of football and an awful lot of clubs were founded by churches wanting to draw people in - especially youngsters - and give them something to do.

Aston Villa for example, started life as a Methodist church cricket team (they wanted to keep fit in the winter so started playing football too) Should have stuck to cricket boys - your team was never a success...

:lol: I've enjoyed reading all this although I don't join in often.

PS. Is G.B. really your brother, I thought it was your O.H.'s title.

You enjoy hearing us tease Phil Sheila?! it IS good entertainment!

Yes, Gooner Boy is my 'little' brother! My DH was called 'gooner boy' on the quiz but he never did the quiz so Tom took over his title and posts on here (well - the footy thread) under it to. Here we are - so you can put a face to the name - he won't mind me posting his pic i am sure - he got all the family good looks...

Haha, compared to some of the photos you put on facebook, that's pretty tame.

And that 11 year old didn't tackle me. It was GBH. Who wears football boots to a church kick about?!

Edit: That photo's from last Easter isn't it? My final year at Uni has clearly aged me...
