chickflick
Can you tell me how can i make sure they don't escape over the garden fence(5 ft high)?.But i also want to protect my raised veg beds which are close to the fence using a wire frame but dont want to provide chickens with a launch pad! What is the maximum jump/flight they can do?(with clipped wings). So far i have seen an easy jump onto a garden table(3ft approx). thank you
Egluntyne
They can do startled jumps easily up to 5 feet. Maybe with clipped wings they wouldn't actually be able to fly over a 5ft fence from the ground though.
KTee
Our flighty Snow White can fly the full length - 30', of the run at 6' even with one clipped wing! We were warned when we got her that she would be like this but thinking back to the breeder his pens were no more than 6' high and she hadn't been clipped when we got her. Perhaps she is just showing off! Edited March 24, 2008 by Guest
superjules
Def depends on the chicken and the motivation! My Daffodil can just about manage 3 foot but the younger ones can get a bit higher. Looking at the breeds you have I'd say a 5' fence will be adequate, unless they are particularly flighty examples!
