KateB
Hi Everyone, I'm in the process of designing and making a new, larger run for my chooks - does anyone know where to purchase chicken wire from at a reasonable cost in relatively large sheets? Many thanks, Kate.
Mrs Frugal
I bought plastic coated wire on a roll from Focus DIY. I assume that a lot of places will sell stuff like this on a roll as it's popular with gardeners. We're moving our run in the next week or so and are getting some heavy duty chicken wire from Wickes. If you've got one near you, they are probably going to be the cheapest. Wickes special offer 50% off galvanised wire netting 900 x 50mm x 10m £7.99 (ws £15.99) www.wickes.co.uk We're using this for the roof but I don't know if it's heavy duty enough to be foxproof for the sides though Kate. Our sides will use the plastic coated mesh instead.
ali-s
We bought all the supplies for our runs from Wickes. It seemed to be the cheapest. A lot cheaper than the two other well known DIY stores
Cate in NZ
I bought chickenwire from Wilkinson's yesterday, they have quite a range of sizes at different, but reasonable prices. I got plain chicken wire (they have coloured and plastic coated mesh as well) it's about 4 foot tall and (I'm guessing here) about 16 foot long and it cost me £5.99 It's protecting the re-seeded area of my lawn very nicely from some greedy little beaks, and will shortly move to the veg patch. If I can find the correct size details (I think I've still got the packaging) I'll post it because I thought it was good value for the money
Guest
I got 50 metres of chicken wire for £25 off eBay. Don't think it is heavy duty enough to be fox proof, but we've had no problems fox wise, and there is enough to do a double layer to strengthen! Bit of a bargain, I think! ubereglu
You can get it really cheaply from Mole Valley Farmers-that's where Dad got ours from to protect the lawn. You could probably get it for around a similar price at Scats country stores etc.

I'm not an eBayer, but I'm continually amazed at the things that some people buy from there.... and what amazing bargains there are to be had. Note to self... check eBay before going out on the next shopping expedition Are there pitfalls from buying from eBay? I worry about lack of guarantees, falty goods, goods not turning up and all manner of dodgy deals when I don't actually know the first thing about who I'm buying from
Guest
You can still get some real bargains on ebay, but you do have to be careful. We always check the sellers feedback, which gives you an idea of the service they give, and the quality of their products. We always pay by paypal, which give a bit of protection if the goods fail to turn up, and only ever buy things where the seller is willing to send by recorded or special delivery - that way there is no arguement over whether something turned up or not. On top of my chicken wire bargain, I received a gorgeous cord blazer today that I got from ebay - brand new, perfect condition, for a tenner plus p&p! Chicken on a mission
I love ebay but you have to make sure that you know how much something is going to cost you in the real world before you get caught out by auction fever I tend to buy all my clothes on there and the money I save by going second hand means that we can have great family days out Not only that, I can't stand clutter so I get a good return on all my unwanteds too
