WitchHazel
Hello. I have a Cube and I clean the dropping trays Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday. Without Fail. I open the back of the cube, take out and scrpae the roosting bars, then slide out the dropping trays and empty the contents into my compost heap, I check the nest box for eggs about four times a day.. On Monday morning, there was nothing odd. This is the day that Scarlett laid her first egg, in the Run. Tuesday, I didn't go near the dropping trays. Scarlett laid an egg in the Run, and Lydia laid her first egg, in the nesting box. Deliilah continued laying an egg a day in the nest box as normal. This morning, I open up to clean out the droppings, and I found four small softees. FOUR. So between about 10am on Monday, and 10.30 am today, Lydia and Scarlett between them have laid 3 normal eggs and four softees. How can they have laid 7 eggs in 48 hours? Is it "normal" to have multiple softees in one day?
Keanie Bean
Ooh what a mystery, I've only ever had one softie from my two girls, but it was in place of a normal one. Let us know if you solve it. Sarah.x
Eyren
It's unusual, certainly, but not unprecedented. One reason they could be softies is that they were passed through the shell gland too quickly because there were others close behind The most likely scenario is that one of your girls had a bit of an ovulation overload and passed several softies before laying a proper egg, whilst the other one laid an egg around 10.15 each morning. I would give them a bit of extra protein (rinsed tuna, scrambled egg, or a good-quality cat food) to make up for what they've used - they probably don't need that much extra calcium, since I think the issue here is too many eggs in a short space of time, not calcium deficiency. WitchHazel
Thanks for that Eyren, I'll given them some tuna with their treats this afternoon.
