Does anyone know about squirrel breeds? I'm not sure what he is.

I saw this little fellow last weekend in Budapest and bits of him were red and he had quite big ears (you can see in the second photo). He was very squirrel-like so presume he is a squirrel.

He's a bit distant as didn't want to scare him off.

Interesting photo - it looks like a fox squirrel - but they are found in America. Perhaps it escaped from a zoo? I'm quite keen on wild animals whatever country, so anyone else got any ideas?

do the 2 breeds inter breed maybe its a cross between the red and grey?

It could be a local variation of the grey squirrel. The one's in the wood just a few yards from our house, have red patches mixed with the grey. Makes them look quite unusual.

He was lovely and just retreated to the tree when some people and a dog came past. Sadly OH couldn't see him in the tree so didn't get one with decent zoom.

 

It had really big ears, much bigger than a British red/grey squirrel. More like small rabbit ears!

In colour it was between the two. More red than a grey squirrel, but most of its body looks grey.

There is a zoo in the same park..

Of course it may not be a squirrel, although moved like one and is in the distance so could almost be anything from my photos!

Red and grey squirrels do not interbreed

 

Grey squirrels have alot of red in them anyway - well when you get up close and personal with them

 

I have a cat that is a demon squirrel hunter and I was amazed at how red they actually are

He was not a red or grey squirrel, unless he is a European big-earred version

I'd never really considered the amount of red or grey in a squirrel before.
