What are Miss Pepperpot and Gingernut Ranger...

Recommended Posts

There have been some posts on the forum wondering what breed the Omlet chickens are and where they get them from. I have been reliably informed that Miss Pepperpot is a Bovans Nera and Gingernut Ranger is a Bovans Goldline.

I was going to order mine with the Eglu Cube but decided that I'd actually like to choose my pets myself. It means that you can see then in a group, choose them on looks and how they fit in.... and if you choose some that are already living together, chances are their pecking order is more or less sorted out already.

Having read this week about the pecking and bullying tactics seen by some of you, my initial choice of 3 - an Amber Star, Bovans Nera and Bovans Goldline has changed. I think as a starter I'll choose 3 Goldlines - they seem to be very easy going and I'll pick them all at the same time from the same group so hopefully they'll know each other.

Then if (when) I want more later I may well go for Bantams or pure breeds.

Any advice on future additions would be most welcome.

how strange - on the "Breeds" section of this website they list the Gingernut Ranger as being a Rhode Island/Light Sussex cross and the Miss Pepperpit a Rhode Island/Maran/Plymouth Rock cross.

I've got two of each and three weeks down the line (fingers crossed) they are absolutely fine together and totally adorable (no eggs yet though....)

Don't know if this helps. In the information pack that we received with our Eglus it says:

Miss Pepperpot - Rhode Island Red/Maran Cross

Similar suitable hybrids - Black Rock,Maran Cuivre,Bovans Nera

Gingernut Ranger - Rhode Island Red/Light Sussex Cross

Similar suitable hybrids - Calder Ranger,Warren,ISA Brown.

Like you I wanted to pick my chickens myself. I got a blackrock (like a pepperpot), Light sussex (pure breed) & a bluebelle (hybrid). All get on well together - as they look so different it is easy to tell them apart and from the eggs I can tell who has laid each day. If you get 3 the same this might be a bit more tricky.

I wouldn't be put off buying different breeds, if bought at the same time at a similar age, and they are of a similar size life should be fine.

If you look on here you will see very few people have all the same, unless they are a group of ex bats.

I ordered 2 Gingernuts originally and then changed my mind and decided I would like to choose them myself, so I cancelled them and just had the Elgu.

But when I got to the breeder yesterday there was only a choice of two!!

The chap who put my Elgu up, Darren, said that if he gets to a house and has a lot of chickens in his van he will let the family choose which ones they want.

I think you will love them whatever you get. I love mine dearly (although they won't go to bed tonight the naughtly little minxes!!).
