over easy
a neighbours dog came thru the hedge while the chooks were in the garden, and chased them around capturing one of them. havin pulled the dog off (german sheperd) was surprised the chook was still alive but at first look does not seem too bad apart from some damage towards her tail end. two others continued to appear unfazed by it all but one was obviously affected by makin alot of noise, while the chook which was attacked was very quiet but does seem to be pecking in the run for food. is there anything i can do to try to calm them down or is it a case of wait and see what happens.this happened about an hour ago

Guest
i was reading about a terrible dog attack in Practical Poultry and the lady whose chickens it happened to is trying to get legislation put in place to make owners more responsible. Irresponsible dog owners really make my blood boil You could try them with a little sugared water (for the shock) or some rescue remedy if you have it? Try and take their minds off it with their favourite treats. If she looks okay and is eating and drinking then probably best to leave her with her friends for the night and just hope she hasn't had too much of a shock. Let us know how she is tomorrow. xxx
cluckbok
Oh sorry to hear that hope she's ok. I would try the rescue remedy. Is there not some fencing near the hedge to prevent it happening again. May be worth having a polite word with the neighbour to ask them to keep their dog away from your property. Poor chooks. Let us know that she's ok in the morning. Egluntyne
Have you made your views known to the owner? The tips about rescue remedy and sweetened water are spot on. If she still seems trembly, bring her in to the warm for a while.
Ain't Nobody Here
Your poor chickens (and you) . I hope the neighbour is suitably apologetic and does something practical to stop his/her dog getting into your garden. Hope she picks up soon . chelsea
Sorry to hear that I would have soooooo shot the dog for that. Not the dogs fault, its the owners. The dog is only doing what is instinct.
