There are a couple of smallholders on here but mostly, as has been said more than once, backyard chicken keepers who don't need or want to hear about shooting or guns.

 

As a smallholder, I respect this and don't discuss some of the finer aspects of keeping animals in this particular forum - I go to River Cottage for that. Shooting is just not an option in most urban, and a lot of rural, gardens. You mention all the firearms checks so you know that neighbour distances and boundaries play a big part in these checks.

 

There are options available to help owners of a few hens to keep most foxes at bay - the highest level option realistically being electric fencing.

 

Why should people on here need to think in a wider context? - they are keeping a couple of chickens, sometimes as productive pets. People with more land and a need to make their living from it do have to look at a wider context - I view my rat problem differently now compared to when I lived with a 1/3 acre garden - but we have different forums to find and offer help.
