Elderly cat breathing difficulties when purring

Please advise. My OH says we can't put the poo on the compost heap 'cos of acidity and will wreck his veg plot. [excuse ignorance, but we are new to chooks]. I have read lots of posts on poo on compost so think it must be OK as I haven't seen any adverse comments or do you treat it or neutralise it in some way?

I am sure there must be an answer to this query somewhere but I can't find it. Do you think it might be a question for ' Frequently asked....?

I'm no expert, but every thing I've read or heard has said that chicken poo is brilliant for the compost heap and the garden (in fact when I told my next door neighbour about me getting some chickens, she was as excited about getting some chicken poo for her compost heap as she was about receiving some of the eggs!!).

 

I think that it is best to compost it - you can put it directly around some plants, but you need to be careful about which ones, as it can burn many plants - however, once it is composted, it is brilliant (in fact you can buy processed versions in garden centres). Also I've read that if you have a veg bed to prepare, let the chickens on - they will scratch it up and manure it at the same time! (but don't let them on it if you've got plants to protect!!)

Be wary about buying processed chicken poo from garden centres etc. It is likely to be the waste products from a battery farm.

 

Not that many of us need to buy it!

Good grief, my compost heap is almost entirely made of chicken poo!! The stuff from the run is so potent my heap is steaming like a kettle!

Some people dilute poo in water and use it like a liquid feed, there could be a book - 101 uses for chicken poo!!

My 3 "dalek" compost bins are overflowing with chicken poo and Auboise bedding. Have put a bit of Garden Lime in the compost bins and a bit on the ground where their eglu was sited last winter.

 

Found this interesting website on composting. It talks about poultry manure as being an activator.

You can use it 'neat' around the base of trees - but composted is best for everything else.

It is a great compost sctivator, my bins have been rotting much faster since we have had chooks

....well he clearly doesn't know it all does he? Poo is great for veggies!!!! I put some on the heap, some direct around my (established) Plum tree and I shall use some as a mulch around my Curcubits when they go in!! It feeds, conditions and mulches all in one - all for free!!

My father-in-law informed me that you shouldn't use it on onions because it makes them very very strong!

 

Does anyone know if you can put it in a wormery? I hope so because my brother has taken some & put it in his after I told him it would be fine. Want't until after I wondered

DEFINATELY compost it. Our rhubarb came up weeks before it should have done and all the other fruit and veg are doing blooming marvellously! We put it down to our composted chicken poop 100%

 

Our compost bin is full now so we're giving it away to people who have allotments via freecycle. In fact, there's one guy who is having a competition with his allotment neighbour who is using Alpaca poo, to see who gets the biggest and best crops.

 

My money is on the chicken poo!
