How do I cool the ladies down?

Recommended Posts

Hello

I need some help.

We have had cool weather for quite some time and now it is very hot, no time to for us or the ladies to get used to it. Literally over night it is very hot. :(

It is easy for me, well sort of. I just take off the sweaters, hat and coat. But the ladies have all these feathers and no way to escape the heat.

There is an amount of shade in the run but they seem hot.

How do I help to cool them down. I can take a cool shower. Can I put them in a cool bowl of water or will they have problems from this??

They are doing what I have seen the garden birds do in hot weather. They sit with their wings slightly away from their body and have their mouths open for a bit.

They are eating, drinking, pooing and laying eggs as normal. They just seem very hot.

Please help as we have heard the weather will be getting hotter for a time.

Also will they drop their feathers to help cool off, if they do is there anything I should do for them.

I know it sounds weird but would they need sun block to protect their bare skin, I assume they can burn just as easily as we can.

Thanks.

Dustbathing helps keep the hens cool so make sure they have access to one in the hot weather.

Mine are the same and loving the sun, sprawling out sunbathing and then relaxing in the shade. I suppose you could give them some cool mash mixed with natural yoghurt straight out of the fridge or cool some sweetcorn.

You can always set up a bowl for 'bobbing'! Quite a few forum users did this when we had a few hot days last year.

Pop bits of their favourite treats into ice cube trays, add water and freeze.

Pop these into a bowl of chilled water and give to the chooks - they will be bobbing for ages, keeping hydrated with the water and getting a little treat too! 8)
