..lay a little egg for me
Hi all Of our 4 hens, 2 are laying so far. Becky (Speckledy) lays eggs with lovely dark yellow yolks but Jenny's (Black Rock) are pale insipid looking things like supermarket eggs. They both free range all day with plenty of grass to eat and layers pellets available ad-lib. Any idea why their yolks are so different? I don't think it affects the taste, but I'm curious... I was looking forward to making lots of very yellow sponge cakes!
Stevie
If she hasnt been laying long-she might need a little time for her body to adjust to egg laying. Try giving them a little mixed corn later in the day as this makes them golden yellow.
dogs and chickens
Hi Caroline, I'm not sure if this will be the reason, but I have a few different breeds and 2 of my hens lay very pale yolked eggs all the others dark yolked eggs! I have no logic to this so put it down to the fact it's a breed thing! Mine like yours free range all day, with pellets as they please and corn once a day! So all on the same diet! I have also found that some of the girls lay a light coloured yolk on some days, maybe if they have not had so much grass/corn or something! I bet your looking forward to all those cakes - Yummy ! Christian
Try feeding them spinach as dark green veg gives them very orange yolks. I grow a bed of it all year round (some protection needed when very cold) and just pull off a few leaves at a time and hang it up. They go mad for it!
