Desperately seeking...

Recommended Posts

2 blue or green egg layers for my hubby as a present for his chicken shed. He mentioned he'd like a couple of unusual egg layers & we are already going to see some Welsummers & Marans on Thursday - but he wants to be able to offer a multi coloured pack of eggs to friends.

Wernlas were not taking any more orders for blue egg layers at the moment, as they already had lots of orders to fulfill.

I don't mind Cream legbars, araucanas or any other blue / green egg laying breed - I just want to get him 2 this week from somewhere local / not too far away. Preferably Cheshire, Shropshire or Staffordshire. I won't go garden poultry at Kingsley, for my own reasons.

Anyone know of anywhere? I want them about 12 - 16 weeks old. I don't want ones that are laying yet.

Thanks.

Hi there.

Thats a difficult one. In most cases I think you'll find that the pure breeds are currently being hatched for 2008 and wont be available now. (We have had wyandottes on order for a while and we wont be seeing those before end Aug. beg Sep.)

We are in the hertfordshire area and all our local poultry centres are in the same situation. What most are offering are some of last years birds that will be alot older than what you are looking for.

Have you thought of hatching them yourselves? :) Also have a look at the Fenton Blue. Gorgeous hens with lovely greeny blue eggs...

Good luck

Troy

Hi Emma,

Can't help you, I'm afraid, with your request as I just took the "chickens for dummies" approach and got mine from Omlet (no offence meant, my lovely Pepperpots).

You didn't say when your OH's birthday was, but if you are under time pressure, you might want to see if a local supplier could write you up a gift certificate so that you OH could pick and choose the hens himself.

Either way, he ought to be delighted! :D

Hi

There has been some discussion on here recently about availability of blue hybrids (called "Cresteds" at this place, otherwise knows as skylines or jasmin) at the moment. I asked my local supplier about this and if it is because they dont reliably lay blue eggs (some are green or cream apparently) and this was the response:

The reason that none of us have the crested in at the moment is because hatchery that raises them has got coccidiosis problems, a disease which is highly contagious for young chicks, Its going to be months before we have any in now. The average rate is about 80% of the hens lay the blue eggs, and I have had lots of people email me to say they are getting lots of lovely blue eggs, but it is an ongoing breeding programme that can take years to get them to lay 100%.

Just thought people might be interested.

Thanks for that Liam. I have been looking for Skylines(=Jasmines =Columbines) and had posted to say that they seemed to have disappeared from the suppliers availability.

Try Sharon Gould, Gould Life Poultry at Pinvin. She breeds (amongs many other things) Aracaunas, not sure whether she breeds legbars. She is absolutely lovely: 01386 554362

Might be a bit of a trek for you, but Julia at Warwickshire Rare Breeds has gold duckwing araucanas and a new hybrid called the Lawford Blue (my Ruby is a Lawford Blue and lays lovely blue eggs)

http://www.warwickshirerarebreedfarm.co.uk/forsale.html

She is just north of Rugby.

GOsh, the Lawford Blue looks like a BlueBelle (which isn't a blue egg layer). But it can't be the same, as she also has Mendlesham Blues (which ARE Bluebelles to all intents and purposes). How spooky.

It's not a very good picture! The Lawford blue is a much more dainty breed, think leghorn/araucana cross! She also has a pea comb and a topknot crest.

Both!

She was the first chicken lady who didn't put her nose up in the air when I said I was getting a cube from Omlet, and then after having seen the chooks at both Wernlas and the Domestic Fowl Trust her chooks were quite frankly a sight to behold! :D

I wanted them all

Maybe I just caught the other two places on a 'day off' as I know they come highly recommended on this site.... :?
