Soon-to-be chicken owner: any tips on dogs & children??

Recommended Posts

We have 2 gingernuts and 1 pepperpot but the gingernuts are easy to tell apart because one has white feathers on her tail. This was down to luck, the guy from Omlet picked them out of the van (I was first on the list! ) But it has made life much easier!! :D

I agree with the others on getting more than 2 girls initially, but my main reason for writing is about the introduction with dogs.

We have two - 1 x Springer Spaniel (he's 12) and 1 x Lurcher (she's 6) - I presumed that the Lurcher would be more of a problem because she was a trained hare courses, but what do you know - it's the Spaniel that is causing the problems - despite his age!

He is absolutely fascinated by the girls and at every opportunity will ram-raid the outside wire fencing of the run. I will admit that he is better than he was and the barking has somewhat changed from a manic constant woof to the odd bow-bow-bow when he thinks we're not looking.

There is absolutely no way in the world I would ever consider letting them meet! We've had the girls since middle of March and despite the Springer getting constantly sprayed with the hose as a deterrant every time he stalks/ram-rods the run it certainly hasn't stopped.

The girls are less bothered by him now than they were, but they still get the odd fright when he does a rear guard attack from behind the green house! Take your introductions gently!

I think you would tell the pepperpots apart - but I know what you mean about getting different colours to make it easy - I got 1 white, 1 grey & 1 brown for that same reason, so it is not a silly idea - the other thing with getting a different breed is that the egg colour/shape may also be different - so it makes life easier to decide who laid which egg, who is laying, who is not, etc.

Hi again everyone,

I am very sad about this (and a bit angry to be honest), but I an unhappy to announce that my husband has balked at the idea of getting the chickens at this time. He thought on it overnight and thinks we need to wait until after we move house. So the order for our cube was cancelled today.

I thank you all for the advice. It will not go to waste, as I am sure we will get chickens one day. When the whole family is on board. Live animals, after all... cannot have anyone who is not ready for the commitment.

Thanks again,

hope to be back here soon,

Stephanie

How so disappointing for you

I was going to say that I think you should get your chickens from the same source as they then smell the same and are more likely to settle in together without any pecking problems which makes life easier for the beginner.

I have two Light Sussex, two Bluebells and two Ginger Rangers and I can easily tell them apart. You just get to know your chickens.

Never mind, your day will come and all the more worthwhile for the wait.

Thanks Sas,

I have been somewhat depressed all day, but I will get over it. As you say, the time will come. And with the whole family as eager as I am, it'll be the right time for us and the chickens.

I only hope the Lilac colour is still available then!

Does anyone know when they will stop selling that colour? Maybe if I have a deadline, I can use it for some gentle nudging.

Alrighty then!

Let's just say, the weekend has been eventful. The marriage is still in tact. But the husband has seen the error of his order-deleting ways, marital harmony has been restored... in other words, my lilac cube and chickens have been re-ordered, and now I await the call from Omlet to tell me what date to expect delivery.

:)

I'm a happy lady. And cannot wait.

And while I will be starting with 2 omlet hens, I am already discussing getting two others from a local breeder a short while later. So 4 hens will keep me happy, well in eggs, and the dog will be outnumbered and, hopefully, intimidated. I will then go for some ex-batteries to finish out my flock later in the year.

Those are my best laid plans. Again, thank you all for the advice -- and for putting up with my back and forth chatter about buying this darned cube!

This forum is invaluable.
