Help - I think I've got a cockerel

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty sure my white silkie has turned out to be a boy!!!! Does anybody know if they are noisy? Haven't heard a peep out of him - but have noticed his feathers are developing differently to my black silkie and he has started strutting!

Can you post a picture?

We are quite good at identifying cockerals on the forum, between us.

Has s/he got a more elaborate comb and wattles and sturdier legs than the other chicken?

Are the hackle feathers pointy at the ends rather than rounded, and do some of the tail feathers arch over?

Hi i'm Battys daughter.

Cockerals generally have quite large red combs. Unfortunately they are quite loud cluckers! :shh: Still, chicks are very cute!

When we first got our chickens i was pretty sure my sister's chicken Emmy was a male. It had a big red comb bigger than the others. But i was wrong. Maybe it's just the appearance of their breed. :?

From what wernlas told me silkies are very difficult to sex - can be 20+ weeks - it may depend on the colour, but I thought the comb on silkies was like a deep purple (black skin) - even fully grown the cocks comb looked smaller than some other breeds of hens.

We need a photo I think.

 Hi I too have a black and white silkie and they both have differant feathers.

White Silkie has Larger tail feather and much bigger than black one definatly a girl as shes laying and quite a bit noiser than black one!

Black Silkie is the better looking one of my two lovely short very very fluffy feathers quite quiet definatly follows the other one around is not the leader by anyway! Not laying yet oddly enough :?:

Black silkie cost me £10 more than the White one for some strange reason yet the white one is most affectionate and laying! The black one just looks good maybe even show material you never know 8)

Keep us posted be interesting to find out!

When I called up Frank from Thorne's to tell him River had started crowing he said that's why they don't like selling silkies that young, as it it very difficult to sex them.

However, he didn't tell us that when we bought him!!!

Before the crowing, River used to do very distinctive diagonal runs across the garden, and flick his wings. We've since learned that the wing flicking is a typical rooster display, The display is sort of like the wings getting clapped together backwards as his head shot forwards - not normal wing flapping.

I think you need to hope your bird starts squatting when you approach, as that will pretty much mean she is a girl.

I wish you the best of luck, it was quite upsetting to have to rehome our pet.
